My baby keeps pushing his food out!

Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advice. My baby has now learnt how to push his food out of his mouth, first time he only done it once that meal. But now ANYTHING I feed him he smiles and pushes it all out of his mouth, every spoonful! How do I not encourage this? It’s very annoying in terms of him eating, he usually eats big meals he’s quite a hungry baby but now none of it is going down...

What age? Will he eat finger foods?

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2020 11:38

Babies like to experiment with texture and this is just a knew experience try and not give it any attention give him a spoon and let him crack on with you also feeding him it will pass.

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2020 11:38

or yes finger food

ForeverBubblegum · 14/10/2020 11:39

How old is he? Younger babies have a reflex to push food out (to stop them choking or eating soil). Most loose it around 6months, though some can be slightly later. If he's older it could be him wanting to be more independent, maybe give him something he can feed himself, toast fingers are an easy place to start.

NannyR · 14/10/2020 11:39

Is it a very recent thing and does he seem under the weather? I've known babies to refuse food when they have tonsillitis as it's the only way they can let you know that their throat hurts.
If it's been going on a while and he's well, then I would say he's worked out that it gets a reaction from you - just ignore it, if he's hungry he will eat. Give him finger foods that he can manage on his own and let him get on with it.

@dementedpixie he’s 9 months now, he does yes if he eats toast and stuff he’s happy but not if I feed him now.

@NannyR he had a cold over a week ago, he seems fine now. Finger food seems to work but it doesn’t fill him up!

I think maybe giving him a spoon as well see how he goes.

When having finger food they take what they need and learn what full means.

What is he doing for you to think it's not filled him up?

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2020 13:19

It could also be a texture thing he might be finding his food to mushy or you are feeding him too fast?

Lalamum2 · 14/10/2020 13:31

@twizbe so if I fed him a jar for instance he would demolish a whole jar for lunch, and still want pudding. He doesn’t cry - ever. He’s a very content baby but feeding him a slice of toast creates a hangry baby. I do want to push the finger food more for him to be more independent with it but it doesn’t fill him up enough

@Mrsjayy he’s been having the same texture of food for the past 2 months, he’s good with lumps and stuff but even his favourite food he pushes out now. Maybe it is just a phase! Just frustrating
