How can I trust midwives etc re breastfeeding?

I would like to bf DD2 when she is born, failed to do so with DD1, basically because of my ignorance and lack of support from midwife staff. Each midwife I did ask for help gave conflicting advice or advice that I have subsequently learned is plain wrong. How do I go about getting off to the best bf start when DD2 is born?

agree with fingerwoman - they can be helpful, but (IMO) it's one of those things you buy when you can't cope without them! save your money and don't get them yet.

Great idea to get it in writing that I plan to bf and nothing should be done to jeapordize that..

BTW, sorry to midwives out there, don´t mean to offend you, I just have the impression that they don´t have adequate training in bfing or even the time to help new mums if they do..

suppose it depends on the birth and how well you feel. a bf cushion is invaluable (well it was to me) could you phone a new mum who bf? do you know anyone in your antenatal who plans to bf to buddy up? i found midwives who hadn't bf unable to help as its was just text book for them. mumsnet was far more helpful. when i got home from hospital it was a hundred times easier i must say.

i also found being alone with my baby (dh bringing chocolate) helped us both get it right and not being watched and advised by all those "helpful" types but they meant well

also, i just kept at it, even though it was a bit hit and miss to start. good luck!

here is a link to la leche league international site.
you can find local support in various countries so hopefully there will be someone where you are
