weird letter written in with someone claiming to be worried that a friend was still bfeeding her two-year-old! expert really quite derogatory, as well as above, said that was bad for mothers health; setting herself up for problems later;not nutritionally any value......
although she said she supported breastfeeding up to six months and no specific cut off was advised, the implication was that 6 months should be it
i was really shocked at the tone of the reply

What do they mean 'setting themselves up for problems later' and 'bad for mothers health'?
I'm still bf dd who is 2.2

incogneato · 11/10/2007 10:42

stupid cow.
utter balderdash.

MurderousMaveta · 11/10/2007 10:44

lol princessmel i read that as 22..

Brangelina · 11/10/2007 10:46

Well, I'm still bfeeding my DD at 2.3 and my health certainly hasn't suffered, as I'm sure is the case with lots of other extended bfeeders.

Why don't you write a letter to the editors setting the record straight (and including WHO guidelines) and questioning the nutritionist's qualifications? Many nutritionists are self styled and actually have no medical qualifications whatsoever.

fishie · 11/10/2007 10:48

what is the name of this expert? perhaps we can look them up and see what other pearls of wisdom they have to share.

what problems?
not nutrtionally any value??? er, why?

pooka · 11/10/2007 11:11

I saw this yesterday and was wondering whether to post it. I haven't fed either of mine beyond 13 months, but always feel slightly jumpy when such silly advice is given, because IMO it has a knock-on effect. She effectively says that beyond 6 months, no real benefit. At least that's the impression I got.

LadyHex · 11/10/2007 11:12

is there a link to the actual letter and reply?
do they have a website?

tiktok · 11/10/2007 11:31

I am puzzled.

How does something that we know is species-specific, ideally matched to the needs of the intended human recipient, and containing antibodies as well as many other unique factors alongside the lactose, protein, fat in the correct proportions....become of 'no nutritional value' at some arbitrary date?

Does something happen to turn it all to water overnight?
Actually, even if it was water, it would still be of value, given that humans need water

This paediatric nutritionist is clearly underinformed, especially of revealing papers like this one

incogneato · 11/10/2007 11:35

tiktok when I was tandem feeding my newborn and my two and a half year old (which all the midwives were horrified about) my GP said "of course there is no value for the toddler."
So I said, so hold on, the newborn is getting this amazing milk full of nutrients and immunoglobins, and then as soon as the toddler feeds she gets sunny delight? wow, that is clever!
this would have had more impact if the GP had known what sunny D was, I think.

tiktok · 11/10/2007 11:41

Why were the midwives horrified?

incogneato · 11/10/2007 11:55

(tis HC btw)
they said that I could not possibly feed a two year old and a newborn, that there wouldn't be enough milk.
one said I should give the two year old milkshakes instead
I just gave up telling them.
my community midwife - to be fair - was very supportive but said she had never known anyone feed past two years or tandem feed I suggested that maybe people didn't always fess up

IlanaK · 11/10/2007 12:04

Yes, I saw this. I have a subscription and am seriously considering cancelling it and telling them why. I actually live a few streets away from their address so might turn up on their doorstep.

Kathyis6incheshighandbites · 11/10/2007 12:33

Does this woman think that all the cultures worldwide and throughout history who have breastfed till 2 or 3 (eg the people who lived in medieval Wharram Percy, to give a Yorkshire example) were all setting themselves up for problems?

milward · 11/10/2007 12:41

ansolutele rubbish - how can so called experts come up with statements like this?

tiktok · 11/10/2007 12:45

incog at milkshakes.

You should have told them you could jump up and down a bit before giving it to him....it's no dafter than what they were telling you.

incogneato - I was exactly the same as you when I had my dd2 - I had a 2 year old still feeding and I was also greeted with shock and disbelief by nearly all the midwives and GPs. In the hospital they all came to see me like I was in a Zoo and were all trying to wonder what kind of milk my baby was getting etc.

Judging by the article tiktok linked the baby was getting milk with more fat etc in it - probably why she fed for about 10 mins and didn't need feeding again for about 4 hours!!

That article is rubbish! I tandem fed for about a year and then stopped the 3 year old and not long after dd2 stopped too because she loved food so much!!

Listmaker · 11/10/2007 12:52

Oh and I was and still am very healthy!

Listmaker · 11/10/2007 12:53

And I thought there was evidence that extended breast-feeding was good for preventing breast cancer??

incogneato · 11/10/2007 12:56

at fio.
well I have now been feeding for four and a half years
I shall be delighted to know what PRoblems I am Setting Myself Up for Later, as I am in the peak of health as are my two dds.
why on earth it should be bad for my health I have no notion.
