Newborn poo!

Wondering if anyone can help - I am getting very nervous about my newborn’s poo which isn’t going yellow.

Baby was born on five days ago - full term, smooth delivery, weighed 3.2kg. Breastfeeding exclusively (as I did previous DC) and on Day 3 my milk had started to come in and she was at birth weight. Poos started to go more mustardy. But the last two days her poo has gone back to black/dark green, she is pooing a lot, generally quite watery. I spoke to the midwife who did the heel prick test this afternoon, and she said we needed to speak to a paediatrician tomorrow if it doesn’t change.

Now I am getting very worried! I know she is taking in milk, I can hear the gulping - plus we are getting lots of wet nappies as well as dirty ones. She has a normal level of gas/wind and no other obvious symptoms. I have slightly cracked nipples so I know she is getting a bit of blood along with the milk, but I don’t think that usually causes problems?

Any other ideas what it could be?! Previous DC was in NICU and so I am a bit prone to getting anxious about their health generally, but this does seem a bit sinister to me. Midwife didn’t volunteer anything. So suggestions/reassurance gratefully received! Thank you so much.

All I can say is dark green poop sometimes means extra iron like if you’ve eaten something really irony? All I know is in adults (I’m an adult nurse), dark/black stool can indicate a bleed somewhere in the GI tract. I HIGHLY doubt that’s what’s happening with your little one Cos there would be other symptoms. But if you’re worried just call your labour ward as babies only a few days old they’ll still assist you (I called them
Lots the first few days lol) or call your HV or GP. Please don’t sit there worrying about it as I’m sure it will be nothing and they’ll be able to put your mind at ease! Hope this helps
