I went to BF support today as needed to get HV there to refer DD2 to hospital for her tongue tie, and this was quickst way.
When i got there, loads of mums (and one supportive dad), sat down.
HV came over and asked if i wanted to get dd2 to feed there, I explained DD had had a feed an hour ao and wasnt due another till later (she was sleeping) she seemed a bit miffed by this, i explained i was there for tongue tie referal, so she did her papaerwork.

The poor lady next to me (1st tie mum who's ds had tongue tie too) was manhandled by the HV, told no no no, your doing it wrong, and hv was gernally like a bulldog.
I asked if DD choking on back of tongue was to do with tie, she started saying it was because i was feeding in wrong position, i explained it didnt happen when i fed by normally when shes sleeping.
She then proceded to show me correct feedign position, nose to nipple, which i knew anyway.

sorry such a long post, she was just soo forceful, very scarcy. She told me to come back after dd has had her tongue cut. I think i will go to a different group! lol

Thanks if you got this far.

Sounds like you would be better off going somewhere else
Was it a sure start one? The ones I've been to have been very good, the HCP introduces herself but then waits to be asked for help.
When is your DD2 having her tongue tie snipped? Hope it all goes well.

lisa- complain. This sort of approach is utterly hopeless.

horrendous ! you have every right to be traumatised. it all sounds pretty wierd to me.

suggest - 1) complain
and 2) go elsewhere, contact la leche or NCT etc

iamasurvivor · 09/10/2007 01:41

i am surestart bf supporter and am horrified to hear of the way of the way you have been treated. you should complain.

please be reassured that that she is hopefully in the minority....

I take it that you have already seen this page? click on the right hand tool bar for more info.

she sounds ghastly and would look for another place today to get a referral if she hasn't done that yet. yes and complain.

I went to a baby cafe (surestart) and when I asked for help was told "the baby knows what to do, you're doing it wrong" and then wouldn't show me what to do. Since ds at that point routinely rooted away from me - go figure. I got more help from the woman sitting next to me who was training as a surestart bf counsellor.

I never went back

callmeovercautious · 09/10/2007 12:33

What a Witch! The one at our group lets you know she is happy to observe feeding if you want but otherwise it is a talking group - a chance to ask about concerns and learn from other peoples experiences. If she had manhandled me or DD like that I would have complained (had I not been locked up for assault first )

Hope the tongue tie is fixed soon and LO is OK.

lisad123 · 09/10/2007 17:16

Im not a shy or quiet type so not too worried about her affect on me, but had been warned by another mum about this health visitor before I went.
I would be going back to that group, but my friend recommended a good one once dd has her snip done. Funny enough, every baby there yesterday had TT {hmm].

Who would i complain to? Its a group run by health visitors.

Thanks for the support

L

if she's a community HV then there will be a complaints/comments officer at the primary care trust; if surestart then the centre manager, all the staff in sure start in our area are employed by NCH check it out.
