Do breastfeed babies ever sleep through?

Just curious really- my LO is 11 weeks old and still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night for food. Do breastfed babies ever sleep right through? x

Haylo, experiment with extra daytime feeds - I think it's all trial and error and then 2 weeks later their habits have changed yet again.

Walnutshell · 05/10/2007 09:07

11pm-5am - yep, that's 'sleeping through'. Apparently. Shudder.

robinredbreast · 05/10/2007 09:14

walnut
know what you mean
i kinda miss that quite feeding them in the middle of the night where it feels like your the only two people in the world.....im miss bringing dd in the bed to feed her and having a lovely sleepy feed/cuddle and drifting off to sleep together ........ah was so lovely .......although this may be a case of looking back with rose tinted glasses !!

Walnutshell · 05/10/2007 09:22

Now when ds comes into bed in the morning for a feed, he pulls my top down (prefers down to up) and wriggles about with his little cold feet battering dh and I and when he's finished, clambers over both of us to fetch some toys with which to give us a through battering.

He's lovely really.

But I may require your rose-tinted glasses at a later date.

Walnutshell · 05/10/2007 10:07

I tell dh it's ds's way of showing affection heh heh

nimnom · 05/10/2007 10:12

Both ds's were exclusively breastfed and both slept through from 6 weeks. It is possible but had nothing to do with what I did. it just happened.
By sleeping through I mean from about 8 to about 5.

robinredbreast · 05/10/2007 11:12

what about day time naps ?

my dd has random 20-30 cat naps if your lucky !!!
[although dd is snoozing in her swing at the moment, rrb counts her lucky stars lol]

do the babies that do sleep as long at night sleep more in the day ?

nimnom · 05/10/2007 12:45

ds1 (now 5) cut out all daytime sleeps before he was one.
ds2 (now 2) still has huge sleep in the middle of the day (usually about 2½ hours) thank goodness or I would go completely loopy!!

SharpMolarBear · 05/10/2007 13:56

Mine does more often than not and he's 5 and a hlaf months

lilolilmanchester · 05/10/2007 14:54

both mine were BF and were sleeping through by 11 weeks. Accept we were lucky, sounds like you're doing OK for 11 weeks TBH. With DS, I fed when, and only when, he wanted. With DD, she had to fit more round our routine, so fed her when i had to (e.g. before doing school run). I also then lifted her and fed her before I went to bed, which eliminated one of the disturbances.

hellish · 05/10/2007 14:56

yes, when they are 2 years. (both my bf dds.)
Oh and don't think that's it. now my 8yr old wakes at least twice a night. help...

robinredbreast · 05/10/2007 14:57

is that hence the name hellish

LadyG · 05/10/2007 21:30

Er mine only at 8 months when I stopped feeding him at night and sent daddy in with a bottle of water three nights in a row...but others seem to do it on their own at variable times b't 10 months and 2 years

My ds (six months) kinda sleeps through by which I mean I have him in bed with me and he wakes up occasionally for little nibbles - I think - but I don't really notice it very often.

So he might not sleep through... but I do!

In answer to the OP I would have thought eleven weeks is quite young to sleep through, although do know some Mums with bf babies, as per some of the posts on here, that sleep through very early on.

And some ff babies who still wake for feeds past six months... think it's more down to the baby than how they're fed tbh.

chankins · 05/10/2007 21:37

My ds slept through 7pm til 7am most nights from 7 weeks - how lucky was I ? Knew my good luck wouldn't last though, as at 14 weeks he started waking again, and now feeds usually twice in the night for a really long time - this is despite just introducing solids this week- he eats SO MUCH! And still wants more in the night! I don't really mind though. Keep telling myself he is the 3rd and possibly the last, so I better get as much of him as I can!

jamila169 · 05/10/2007 21:57

I can't really say when any of my three slept through (11-5 for me so i could go back to sleep again lol!) they just did - one week I was waking up 2-3 times in the night - then a couple of weeks later, I'd realise 'hang on, I've not been up in the night for a few days!
I vaguely remember the boys being reliable by 8 months and DD a bit later(she still sometimes has a bad night at 2 1/2)

chipmonkey · 05/10/2007 22:20

Ds1 did! And I WOKE HIM UP!!!! to feed him. How I used to weep at the thought when feeding ds2 at 3 am.

woodstock3 · 05/10/2007 22:43

well my (exclusively breastfed) ds started sleeping 11-7 at eight weeks and by 12 weeks was doing ten hours at a stretch.
but unfortunately now he's regressed totally and at 20 weeks is up three times a night. . just started solids in the hope of reversing it. apparently it's quite common for babies who sleep thru unusually early to go backwards as they get older so guess we all end up at the same place in the end....

imaginaryfriend · 05/10/2007 22:46

My dd was exclusively bf and slept 10pm - 7am at 5 weeks old. By 3 months old she was sleeping 8pm - 6am, having one feed and going back to sleep til 9am. By 6 months she was sleeping a full 12 hours no problem.
