Does anyone know if it's okay to take zinc supplements while breastfeeding a 12 month old baby??? Thanks.

Hi Ellaroo

It is fine to take zinc supplements - but only alongside a general multivitamin/ mineral complex that is suitable whilst breastfeeding. This is because zinc antagonises other vitamins/ minerals (especially copper) and so you do not want to throw anything out of balance. Good pregnancy/ post natal supplements which are available at health food shops include biocare, lamberts, higher nature, solgar. I wouldn't go for a boots or sainsbury's own brand - it really is the case that you get what you pay for with supplements.

Also, are you sure that you need it? There is a very simple zinc taste test which can show whether you are deficient.

If you want more detailed supplement advise, a really good and reputable company who will answer queries on a help line is Biocare - their number is 0121 433 3727 (ask to speak to a nutritionist).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, Percy. What is the taste test??? (I hope it's something to do with chocolate!). I think I probably do need it as I read in a magazine (Red, I think), that I have all the symptoms of zinc deficiency: tiredness, overactive histamine, poor circulation etc etc. However, would be interested in knowing what the taste test is to make sure. Thanks.
