Stopping bf toddler avoiding mastitis

Hi,

I’ve been advised to stop breastfeeding due to medical reasons as I need to recommence medication for my heart. I’ll be seeing my cardiac consultant in October so hoping to have weaned my 19 month old off by then.

My problem is that I always get blocked ducts and often mastitis. Never had mastitis once with my first child but I’ve probably had it more that 10 times with this bubba. I forget how awful it is until it strikes again Sad

Does anyone have any advice on reducing feeds really slowly to avoid blocked ducts and mastitis? If I just cut out a feed I guarantee my boob will be engorged within hours. Do I hand express? Pump? Let little one feed but reduce the time?

Any thoughts welcome! Thank you x

Reduce time per feed rather than number of feeds? We introduced a count down, especially with the bedtime feed or a 3 more on/off/ faff about, 2 more, last chance type thing

Hand express for comfort if you need to but just enough to prevent blockage etc

Is it night feeds as well?

(oh and if you're really struggling, decongestants can reduce supply so that might help)
