Help! i think my ds has given me thrush but can i use his gel

Hiya,

My 6 wk old ds has had oral thrush off and on since he was bout 10days old (result of intence course of anti-biotics given to both of us after birth). He was treated with nystatin then daktarin oral gel which has cleared it up. But now think he has passed it on to me.

Does anyone know if i should/can put his daktarin gel on my nips and if this will help?

Any advice greatfully recieved as feels like im having my nip pulled out from root with pliers everytime he feeds! OUCH!

I'm fairly sure you can - you shouldn't use the normal cream on nips because obviously it goes in his mouth so by defualt the gel would be the thing.
Don't some people use live yogurt for thrush down below? Perhaps covering yourself in that would help

Thanks, just put his gel on for now but will try the nat yoghurt, which freakishly bought earlier in Tesco, later once he in bed (touch wood!)

yes thats what i was told to do with dd when she had oral thrush and i had it on my nipples

littlepoopsy - i was advised by my bf counsellor to bathe my boobs and nipples in a solution of baking soda to change the ph??

Yes put the oral gel on nips, but wash off before BF (so I was told).

Don't put nappy thrush cream on nips though!

i'm just guessing that its thrush...
is it normal for thrush to make boobs really sore, even when not feeding

Yes.

I had thrush boobs with DD, only realised as she had thrush in nappy area which kept coming back. HV sent me to GP who gave me gel or nips, DD same gel for mouth and cream for bum. It all cleared up and I was much less sore.

I would assume you should both be treated as its common for it to be passed from one person to another (vaginal too). You should both be treated as you may have it anyway but not be showing symptoms (and vice versa).

Not sure if his medication would be ok for you.

I was advised by bf counsellor to use Daktarin oral gel for dd and Daktarin cream on my nipples after every feed. It's only day two of using it but seems to be easing a bit. It is VERY painful, I sympathise, let's hope we get over this soon. I thought I had the latch wrong and was getting very demoralised about how much bf hurt. After all this is my first baby, 3 weeks old only, and it's not like I know how much it should hurt. The books all say it shouldn't hurt but then my NCT friends all said it did hurt for the first couple of weeks. When I mentioned dd's white tongue to HV she didn't even examine her, just said it was milk on her tongue!

Hi LittlePoopsy,

I had thrush really badly with DD2 and it's bloody painful. We had a good thread going with a few sufferers on here and I was recommended Citricidal tablets (extract of grapefruit seed). I bought some Exspore tablest online and they were the only thing that cleared it up. Once thrush gets into your milk ducts it is very painful, especially following a feed and worse at nights - kept me awake with the pain.

You can also buy citricidal from health food shops and add to nappy washes etc to clear thrush. Are you using a breast pump at all as if so you need to use Milton on pump and bottles until you get rid of it - thrush can survive even a 20 minute boil apparently!

Good luck - my friend stopped bfing at 6 weeks 'cos of thrush and I think it's a big problem these days. I'm still feeding at 18 months though and have been thrush free for a year.

So I suppose I'd need to use Milton on dummies too? I've just been using boiling water.

Yes! Otherwise the dummy will just be reinfecting. It's a pain but Milton is cheap and you won't have to do it forever.

My GP said daktarin cream was better for nipples (sinks in easier), but the gel was fine too. Was also told canesten was fine, but to wash off before bfing. I used nystatin drops for the oral thrush in the DS's - seemed easier to get in. Also preferred nystatin cream for their bums (I've been through months and months of this!). I also had it down below - I got prescribed the cream pessaries and cream combo packs (rather than the tablet pessary). My MW recommended this as being gentler for areas that have had enough trauma already . I had to use a pessary every 3 days for about 3/4 doses, then weekly for a month in combo with oral and nipple treatment to really clear it all. I also followed some of the diet guidelines (mainly watch your sugar and yeast intake). HTH.

Yes - sterilise anything that goes in his mouth - dummies, toys, bottle teats.... Also watch out for towel sharing. If you're using cloth nappies, you need to think about doing a high temp wash, or other methods of making sure there's no nasties in them.

My boobs are hurting in sympathy for you all!

You know I had thrush for so long that I forgot what pain free bfing was like but it is fab when you eventually get rid of it. It was my pump that was making it reoccur I think.

Anyway as I said those Exspore did the trick even after a course of Fluconazole failed. I had to get my sis to buy this for me in Cambodia as my doc wouldn't prescribe it - God it was such a trial!!!

Just looked on a website and it says that although you can feed ebm whilst you have thrush don't freeze the milk as the thrush will survive and reinfect so may be worth thinking about...

Am still using the Daktarin but BF counsellor warned me it would take a few days before I'd notice an improvement, and even said it might appear to get worse before getting better. Well, I'm in agony on right side now, two hours after a feed. Am dreading the next feed. I think I now have vaginal thrush too. Am wondering if I should see my GP - is there anything more effective than Daktarin that I can get on prescription?

Also, can I take any painkiller tonight that might help, eg Ibuprofen, paracetamol?
