Change in breastfeeding

Hi all

I’ve just managed to wean my 5.5MO off nipple shields and he’s now managing every feed without them. I’m so proud of both of us as I thought this would never happen.

When he was feeding with shields, his feeds took around 22-30 mins, but now we aren’t using the shields they are only taking about 8 minutes. Is it normal for babies to feed so quickly?!?

I have a very fast let down and lots of milk so I think it’s possible that he’s getting enough In that short time but because he’s so easily distracted and on/off my breast constantly (no worse than with nipple shields - he’s just at that age!) I’m just a bIt concerned. He’s having plenty of wet nappies and pooping every couple of days which is normal for him.

How can I be sure he’s actually finished feeding and not just getting distracted?

Thanks 😊

Assuming that he's not having solid food or water, then the nappies should give a far indication. If he's wetting about the same amount as before, he will be getting what he needs. He's probably just able to extract milk more efficiently now.

Feeds do get quicker so he may well be getting all he needs. Can you check his weight gain?
