Bleeding nipples - can baby still feed?

My nipple started bleeding yesterday, and today I expressed of 3 oz before realising it is pink!

What should I do, can the baby still feed from that side? She is 13 weeks so I think it is the pump rather than latch. If she can't feed how should I relieve the bleeding breast.

I'm really pissed off, what a waste of milk, and I just need a break from feeding.

you can still bf will bleeding, but its horrible having sore nipples isn't it? use lanolin, i found it very helpful. you can get it on prescription, or from chemists over the counter.
get in touch with a bf counsellor if possible, it could be the pump or it could be the latch too...when those babies grow you sometimes need to shift the position a bit to accomodate their growing bodies.
best of luck. x

I don't think the pump would cause your nipples to bleed so I'd get your latch checked by a bf counsellor if poss. You can still bf with bleeding nipples though.

My nipples were very sore and bled alot in the early days of feeding my first baby. I was told to carry on and it didnt seem to have any effect on him, even when there was blood trickling down his chin, lovely hey!
stick with it and am sure it will stop soon. I also highly recommend using lansinoh cream, it works wonders on bleeding nips!

It's perfectly safe to feed with a bleeding nipple, but it is outrageous if a pump does that to do....I'd ask for my money back.

bumper...how are things now? have you tried nipple shields to give your nips a break?

bumperlicious · 21/09/2007 15:27

Thanks for the replies, it's seems to be ok, quite painful but healing quite quickly. It wasn't so much hurting with the feeding, but it was with the pump, I guess I just thought I was being a bit vigorous with it. I'll stick some lansinoh on it.

I'm mostly gutted at the waste of milk - that was my early night!

I remember pumping pink milk too - NICE!!!!!

I chucked it in the end, couldn't bear to give it to her even if it is safe!

oh a pumping tip: DON"T go as hard as you can. i just did it as lightly as i could whilst still getting some milk. it might take longer, but it is softer on your tender nips.
glad they seem to be healing.

Thanks, I was going for a long pump getting a much out as possible to save lots of pumping but don't think it has done me any good!
