Period and breastfeeding

I'm exclusively breastfeeding and baby is 7 weeks old. Tonight I experienced spotting and have started getting cramps. I thought I wasn't going to have a period for months? Is this normal?

I bf for 10 months and my periods came back at 4!

I had an extremely light period 6 weeks after giving birth and haven't had a period since. My DS is 4 months this week, he is just breastfed.

@nattiee thanks. I hope I'm the same, I've heard a period can impact milk supply 😒

Look at Dr Jack Newman. He explains that rather than causing low supply, a period happens when demand is lowered reducing your supply. How is feeding going? Is baby growing well and doing enough nappies? Do you have any other concerns? Alternatively is there anything you are aware of such as baby sleeping through, you've just given a dummy or a bottle in the evening that might be reducing your supply? If any of these points make you concerned I'd personally book an online consultation with an IBCLC.

@Hollywhiskey baby is super chunky, gaining lots of weight (over 5kg at 7 weeks) and lots of dirty and wet nappies, poo is the correct colour and consistency.
She slept a little more yesterday but don't think that could have caused it. Little to no more spotting over night 🤷🏼‍♀️ weird

My periods came back at 6 weeks post birth both times. Carried on breastfeeding until 7 months and 18 months with no issues.

My period came back at 4 months despite EBF with frequent night feeds.
I do get painful nipples just before my period and my supply dips a bit which isn’t great as baby needs to feed a lot and it’s not the nicest!
Baby 8 months now and periods are regular although marginally longer cycle than before.

More slight bleeding today (a bit more red rather than pink) I'm a bit gutted, really thought I wouldn't get a period for months. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 supply continues as normal 😢
