Feeling grotty with mastitis. Have tried the usual heat/massage/hydration/feeding baby on that side. Any other tips to help get rid of this?

Thanks MN

Have you got antibiotics? I found holding the shower over it as hot as I could stand and massaging towards the nipple helped, as did positioning DD with her chin towards the sore part. But really you need antibiotics, I was feeling markedly less shit overall within 24 hours.

Also Thanks it's shit.

Antibiotics, 100%. Give the doctor a call ASAP, especially if you have a temp

Cabbage leaves in your bra are supposed to work. I had antibiotics

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 27/04/2020 20:15

Really hot bath and hot flannel compress worked for me.

I've had it a few times, never needed antibiotics though, I always took paracetamol AND ibuprofen and massaged the hell out of the sore area, from behind the lumpy bit towards the nipple, apply heat as often as you can (a hot water bottle with a cover on is great) and feed on the sore side as often as possible, don't neglect the other side though. If it's not better in another day or so you may need antibiotics. I'm sure the Dr will prescribe them anyway to be on the safe side but it's up to you if you want to plough on without for now.

Check your nipple for any milk blebs. The blockage won't budge if there is one that needs to be dealt with. Have you tried dangle feeding?

If you're feeling rough you may need antibiotics. I once left my mastitis a little too long thinking I could deal with it myself and ended up very ill.

You might need antibiotics. A warm shower and massage the blocked area gently might help. I suddenly got quite poorly with a temp of 39, uncontrollable shivering and dizziness so GP prescribed antibiotics within the hour. You might be able to clear it before but just be aware if you start to feel poorly.

I don't want to scare you but please seek medical help. I had recurring mastitis and ended up having to be admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics. Hope you're feeling better soon

Everyone else has said the usual tips so I will just emphasise the ‘massage the hell’ advice. Even if you have/get antibiotics, you still have to shift the blockage. Bath is best, shower second best and work methodically and repeatedly from behind the fecking painful bit, up to the nipple, you’re literally trying to break something up and push it out. Do it as long as you can stand, before and after feeds, and massage in between too. Holding a hot water bottle on it in between massages can be helpful too. Also if you have anything that vibrates Wink y’know, elec toothbrush etc, hold that on the area. And major attention to latch and positioning being as good as can be. Oh, the pain. Poor you. Give us more details and can maybe add more, how longs it been going on for?

Get an over the phone appointment with a doctor and get them to prescribe antibiotics. Also cabbage leaves do help.

ChelseaCat · 28/04/2020 19:15

Thanks all - lots of hot hot HOT heat and firm massage, now feeling much better

BUT I realise I’ve been an idiot - I should have got onto the doctor for antibiotics as soon as I felt flu like symptoms. I was lucky this time and won’t push my luck if it happens again. Lesson learned.
