Domperidone

Not sure if I'm posting twice as my first seems to have got deleted. Anyone tried domperidone? Did it work? I've only got 1 weeks supply as the doctor refuses to give me anymore. My baby is 4.5 months. He's given me 10mg 3x daily.

I've not tried it no and I've not seen your other post either. Had the GP said why there's only a weeks dosage?

I used it with dc4(4), it worked really well (I pumped & breastfed) but after about 2 months they refused to prescribe anymore ‘as I should have an established supply by now’ didn’t change frequency of feeding/pumping sessions & my milk was gone within a week of stopping. They don’t like prescribing it because it’s not being used for it’s intended purpose but for a side effect.

I used it, really struggled with supply for about 6 weeks before it got prescribed, then had no problems. Can't remember how long I took it for though, certainly wasn't the entire time I was breastfeeding. Maybe a few months?

Thank you ladies for your responses. As I feared my dosage seems to be really low. Sigh.

They don't like prescribing it as it's actually an anti sickness medicine. They're trying to get rid of it entirely however. I read that formula companies lobbied against it in the U.S. I wonder if there's any truth to that.

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints do you mind me asking why you took it? Was it early on? I wonder if it might help me as my supply was established up until a few weeks ago. I'd hate it to diminish it entirely.

I couldn’t bf dc1 & 2, it was initially put down to extreme stress & I was reassured by the nurses & doctors at the time that without the shock & trauma of their births I likely would have been able to bf. They were both, unexpectedly admitted to scbu at birth, dc2, prem, particularly was incredibly poorly. Dc3 I ff through choice (she actually was born healthy at term but the signs during the pregnancy hadn’t pointed that way).

With dc4 I decided to give it another go, his latch was slightly off early but we’d got it sorted within about a fortnight (with the help of shields) however he still wasn’t gaining properly, my hv suggested I have a look at the studies in to domperidone when I saw her at 4 weeks. By the time we had the 6 week pp/nb check I’d had to start giving formula. I took all the info on dom with me & the GP agreed to prescribing it for me to try. By the end of the week I’d started producing enough that I was mixing 50/50 with the formula feeds he was having.

From what I read at the time most people are able to maintain a supply once they stop taking it.

I was able to exclusively bf Dc5 without any issues though.

They don't like prescribing because of the slight increased risk of heart problems. Theyv are happy to give to babies for reflux though so personally I don't think that's a good argument to refuse. My gp said he wasn't allowed to prescribe it (arguing with dds paediatrician), so I'm not surprised you've only got a low dose.

@AGoodDay it doesn't make sense to me why they're cracking down on it so hard. So many older mumsnet users would take it for ages.

My opinion is that it's a combination of not knowing so much about the risks previously (although I believe they're very small it's apparently no longer licensed for that use as a result) and the move from breast is best to fed is best. I admit to being very distrustful of the nhs but they seem very keen for women to try breast feeding and very keen for them to give up if they want any support.
