Feeling more & more nervous my LO isn’t getting enough milk. For background we starting weaning him at 4months (as per dieticians advice due to allergies before anyone jumps on this!😢).

His day roughly goes like so:
8.30am/9am- wake (refuse milk)
10am- try again for milk won’t take so make porridge and fruit
11.30 nap (try for milk when upstairs sleepy, sometimes drink 1oz)
1pm try for milk refuse
2pm 7oz roughly takes & lunch solids
2.30pm 2hr nap
4.30pm wake try for milk refuse
5pm dinner solids & water
Between 6-8.30pm try for milk refuses completely
Cries hungry at around 8.30 but outright refuses to drink milk but gobbles up when given spoon feed of an Oz of milk mixed with a sugar free farleys rusk, or porridge oats 🥴
Wakes between 3am-5am and guzzles 7oz and goes straight back to sleep until 8.30-9am again!

I keep seeing he should still be taking around every 4hrs, that would be 24oz roughly compared to his 14oz 😭😭

Can I ask what his allergies are? I've got CMPA and I wonder if he's associating the milk with stomach pain?

Avidwatcher · 04/04/2020 15:54

Thank you so much for the reply. Yes we have CMPA and a few others so far with weaning but we sorted his allergy’s when he was only a few weeks old & he has been great with his milk but now seems to prefer solids.. it isn’t like before where he would suck and squirm and he doesn’t have tummy trouble he did at one point but we sorted that with dietician and he’s been settled on prescription milk for over 4 or more months and I really don’t think it’s that ☹️. Can’t even speak to the dietician because of all the going’s on.

Having CMPA myself, I know what you are saying but he probably just prefers the solids.

I'd keep trying with the milk, give him a multivitamin and make sure he has plenty of good days like oily fish, adding olive oil to purées and lots of calcium rich foods too

Lots of people seem to focus on the missing calcium but they need the fat, protein and vitamins too..

Obviously only do this till you manage to speak to the Paediatric Dietician Smile

Thanks for the advice appreciate it, just worrying when you see that he should be having up to 30oz but not sure if that’s a baby who wasnt weaning early and is still just tasting. I will Defo look for a multivitamin thanks a million.

I thought at 6 months it was 20floz?

Avidwatcher · 04/04/2020 22:48

Hi jilted. If it is I don’t feel as bad, he’s only around 5oz short. Might try make up his porridge with an oz or two to get closer to goal 🤞🏻 Thank u x

Yes it's 20floz until they're 10 months, then it moves down to 13.5 floz between 10 and 12 months. Between 12 and 24 months it goes down again to 10 floz and it does include milk in foods at that age too Smile

Thank you so much everyone. I got a hold of a dietician & she suggested It may be because he has lots of tastes he now prefers and is old enough to know (lol) so try a small drop of vanilla Essence.. worked a treat & he guzzled his milk again with breckie and lunch. relief 😀

That's good news Smile

Avidwatcher · 06/04/2020 13:43

Defo Jilted, thanks again for replying. I did always feel bad when we had to switch to special ‘milk’ as it is sour tasting so it makes sense as it was tough enough to get him to drink it at first lol. Day 2 and he is back to drinking a few oz Every 4hrs along with his grub. Relief.😀
