How much formula do you get through?

Hi I’m 33 weeks pregnant and planning on ff. I understand some will not agree with that decision and that’s fine but it’s my decision and one the father of my baby fully supports and agrees is the best thing for our family.
I’m tempted to give the first few days of colostrum from the breast (not decided yet) but beyond that will be formula feeding.

Just wondering how long a tin of formula lasts at newborn stage and does this change as baby gets older?

Tia

It will change as the baby gets older. They may not drink much at first, newborn’s stomachs are tiny Smile

Pretty quickly they will need 2.5 floz per pound in weight in 24 hours. A 10lb baby will need 25 floz a day.

At 3.5 months the average weight for a boy is around 15 lbs, that’s 37.5 floz a day. Bearing in mind they don’t start solids until 6 months as well

I wouldn’t buy too much formula either. You might find that your baby doesn’t suit a certain brand, for instance there are a lot of posts on here in the last few months talking about problems with Cow & Gate and Aptimil.

Thanks for the reply but I really just wanted to work out roughly how many tins a month we’d be using approximately.

My little boy has just turned 1. At the height of his formula eating it was probably around 2 tins a week I think.

However. He was never a milk guzzler so I think he probably had a lot less than friends babies who were formula fed. I

I would say you could get through 2-3 a week

Depends on the baby but I think we are roughly 1 tub a week.

Mines 6 weeks just now, it goes up a bit in the period before they start solids.

I remember buying 5 tubs most months Smile used to just get them all at once when I knew the milk suited the baby.

That’s great thanks everyone I knew it would vary but just wanted a ball park idea to begin with.

Yeah, I'd say a tub lasts us just under a week. I actually found we got through more in the first few weeks/months than we do now (DS is 6 months) because there's quite a lot of wasted bottles or bottles where the baby will have an oz and you have to throw the rest away.

When ds was first home we combi fed and went through 1 tub the first month, he was prem so was drinking less, i very naively thought that it wouldn't be that expensive 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Yeah he soon caught up and was drinking a shed load more, he was a total milk monster and still is now at 5. Luckily now he is on cows.

Between 1-3 months he was on around 3-4 tubs a month, then between 4-12 he probably had 5-7 depending on his appetite.

Thanks everyone for the insight really helpful
