Over feeding?

Hi everyone

My formula fed DS is almost 11 weeks and has started being sick during or up to 2 hours after a feed.

He was draining 5oz bottles so we started making 6oz bottles and letting him take as much as he wanted from them. He feeds roughly every 4 hours (if he's been sick it's usually around 3-3 and a half hours between feeds).

When he was a few weeks old he was given Gaviscon for silent reflux but didn't get on with it, it made him really sicky and we have since found that propping his bed up does the job without the need for medication.

I have asked my HV for advice and got given a massive lecture about over feeding and because I have chosen to formula feed I am probably giving him too much. I am thinking of going back to 5oz bottles to see if he is taking too much but in the same breath the HV told me I should be feeding on demand!

Any help/advice is welcome, I would quite like to start and finish a day in the same clothes!

Kim x

I meant to add:

He's not sick at every feed and doesn't always take a full 6oz. He tends to take between 3 and 4 for his first feed and then gradually more at every feed. I don't force him to finish the bottle.

Hi - jumping on this thread! My 7 week old baby has just started regularly projectile vomiting and it sounds really similar!
He used to be sick once a week and barely regurge but the last 5 days or so it has been daily. He was sick at 8pm last night (full
bottle everywhere) and again at 6am this morning (which was particularly torturous).

He's been getting offered 5oz bottles for about 3 weeks. Sometimes he finishes them, sometimes he'll only take 4 and sometimes even 3! We feed on demand and I wouldn't actually say he's a huge eater as he can go 4/5 hours between.
My friend is a Dr in paediatrics and she worked out last week that a baby of his weight and age should be on about 24oz a day which he almost bang on achieves.

I'm desperate to try and stop it!

Just to add - he seems totally unbothered by it and by the time you clean him up he's hungry again!

So far giving him 5oz instead of 6oz bottles is working. We have tried tonight giving a 6oz as his last feed and so far so good!

My Ds is also 11 weeks and I have just started giving him 7oz bottles as he was draining 6 and then crying for more. Today he has had 5x 7oz bottles as opposed to 6x6oz so he’s taking the same amount for the day.
He is also quite a pukey baby and my HV suggestion was to put dentinox in his bottle to take the bubbles/gas away and he would allways bring up milk when burping. So far it seems to have improved things.

It seems like you are feeding on demand. If you think he may be having too much, ff babies should be having roughly 2.5 floz per pound in weigh in 24 hours.

So a baby who weighs 12 lb for example should be having 30 floz in 24 hours. If you work it out from LO’s weight, does it sound about right?
