Breastfeeding slowed down 4 weeks old

Baby was feeding fairly constantly for first three weeks but in the last few days it has really settled down over the last couple of days. Baby now feeds for between 5-10 mins at a time, couple of times in the morning, early afternoon, then a couple of times at night. Through night she is only waking once or twice for a feed, again no longer than 15 mins. Is this too infrequent for this early on?

Sounds like you might have an efficient feeder. My 10 week old has never spent longer than 10-15 mins feeding and rarely goes for the second side. She’s only ever woken once or twice in the night too. Midwives said she was just efficient as she’s gaining weight like a trooper.

I think they say that once a baby has regained their birth weight (assuming yours has) that they should feed at least 6 times in 24 hours. But that’s guidance only and every baby is different.

Plenty of wet and dirty nappies? Gaining weight? Probably totally fine but worth speaking to HV if you are worried and/or your baby seems unwell in any other way.

I never had more than a 10 minute feed on one boob from DS til he was older than 6 months and could cope with my flow. He spat up plenty too but gained a pound a week for about first six weeks then maintained 98 centile line
