I keep getting sharp pains in my breasts on the edge of the areola, feels like something sharp is digging into me. Any ideas what it could be?

Bumper - how old is you lo? Could be letdown pains? or things settling if bfing is established?
Obviously you need to consider teeth or mastitis - have not had it but I think the pains tend to be around the blocked duct rather than nipples.

Bump for more help!

could be thrush too. Any white patches in baby's mouth

weeonion · 16/08/2007 22:33

bumper - do you normally feel your let down? coudl it be this?

NineUnlikelyTales · 16/08/2007 22:34

Is it when the baby feeds, afterwards, all of the time?

Easywriter · 16/08/2007 22:34

Um! This has never happened to me but from reading posts on a yahoo birth group could it be thrush?

Maybe someone else will comment.

I do feel my let down (though bizarrely not when feeding) and it's not that. It's further up the boob, past the areola, was wondering if it was something to do with ducts. It's not all the time, can't remember if it's during feeds either.

bumper - do you have a local bf support group / specialist??

loolop · 17/08/2007 09:59

bumper does your nipple also turn white after feeding?

LadySnotAlot · 17/08/2007 10:14

I had a blocked duct in one of my breasts and used to get this when feeding from that side.

NineUnlikelyTales · 17/08/2007 12:03

My blocked ducts are really obvious because I get a huge lump but I'm not sure if everyone gets them.

It does sound a bit like when I had thrush. It was very painful. If you do have it you will need to treat yourself and baby too, to stop re-infection. Ask your HV or GP for some advice. The treatment for me was antifungal gel for DS mouth and cream for my nipples. I washed my bras at 60 degrees, changed them every day obviously, and took acidophilus tablets as the topical treatment didn't work by itself.

It sounds as if the other MNers are giving you similar advice: My SIL had repeat bouts of thrush and it sounds similar. If this is the case it can be tricky to heal... My blocked ducts have always been obvious lumps as well.

Loolop, not sure, I will check next time! If it is thrush, would it hurt all the time? It's only every now and then I get a sharp pain. Next time I feel it I will try and pay a bit more attention to when it is happening and where, thanks for the replies
