My 15 week old DS has been EBF up until two weeks back. He lost weight and was feeding more than ever and the consultant said as my supply had clearly dropped we needed to start supplementing with either expressed milk or formula.

Borrowed hospital grade pump, couldn't get anything out. Started giving formula throughout the day when he finished a breastfeed and still seemed hungry, all was well and he started to fill out in himself a bit more within days.

Cut to Friday, point blank rejecting bottle. Will not take it no matter what tricks we try. He's breastfeeding almost constantly, for hours at a time. He'll fall asleep at the breast and when I move him he wakes up and starts eating his hands again until I put him back on.

It's now Sunday and he's still feeding for hours at a time, every time I take him off all he does is chew his hands and moan until I put him back on. I don't think I'm filling him up and I'm so worried. Going to go see my health visitor tomorrow but just can't breastfeed this much!! It had gotten so easy (until my supply dropped) and pain free and now my nipples feel like they did at the very beginning again. Sad

There's a special thing you can use to supplement low supply where the baby still feeds from the nipple. I don't know what it's called, how it works or what it looks like or where you would get it from, but it exists.
Also, have you tried (very carefully) with a cup, or with using a Calpol syringe? I have heard of breastfed babies generally doing better with a cup or syringe than with a bottle.

Supplemental nursing system (SNS) Tiggers

Has baby been checked for tongue tie etc?

Did he actually lose weight or just drop lines?
