Where do you think it is inappropriate to BF

Reading lots of posts about people who have bf everywhere with admiration. I am happy to bf in public, and have even done it on a park bench. When I am out and about I do sometimes fret about finding somewhere "appropriate" to bf, i.e. a cafe or something, but I am just wondering if there are places where you would consider it to be inappropriate to bf? e.g. in a shop, on a train?

Everywhere is fine. Has to be better than a screaming, hungry baby.

kerala · 16/08/2007 18:39

Foxcub I think you dont need bf tops. Normal tops are fine as long as they are not too tight and hard to pull up.

Had to bf on the bus once. Abit awkward but no one (inc some teenage lads) batted an eyelid

A friend sitting next to me bf'd at a Jewish wedding, where men and women had to sit separately. I was stressed thinking someone would say something but it seemed to be fine and no one did.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 16/08/2007 18:42

The only place I found it 'inappropriate' to feed was in those toilet/ changing/ feeding closets - I don't like sitting next to an overflowing nappy bin to feed thanks

Have feed on train many times (busy commuter trains a couple of times) my fellow passengers have always preferred a quiet suckling baby to screaming blue murder baby ime. I have not enjoyed the awkward trying not to flash bloke opposite finagling with baby and top etc. req'd when doing it but it is a pooey nappy I dread most on the train. V glad youngest is 16m now.

I have bf in many places of worship
I have never bf in a loo bleugh how revolting
btw as a matter of interest in many traditional Muslim countries where women are often veiled, women often bf quite openly ime.

massivebigpantsface · 16/08/2007 18:48

I can't think of anywhere but the loo! Some of the parent and baby facilities are disgusting!
I have fed dd in a church, train, tube, restaurant, cafe, aeroplane, museaum, beach, park.....every where I've been and whenever dd was hungry!

Tapster · 16/08/2007 18:55

Never bought a BF top - don't think I show that much. Fed anywhere and everywhere. Fed in front of a bishop (my friend's dad) he was a bit shocked and I was staying at his house but DD was hot and thirsty from the open fire and she needed feeding.

DD now 9 months and huge and I do get a few odd looks but I don't really care. Have two SILs with their own children/babies/bumps and they make me the most uncomfortable about BFing but I know its their problem as they can't believe I'm still BFing and have never given formula. They think its unnatural...

TheBlonde · 16/08/2007 18:55

Foxcub - I think nursing tops depend on your shape/size. They all look terrible on me!
The boob ones from the NCT were okay but a bit tricky if you are large of nork

I have racked my brain but can't think of anywhere inappropriate to bf
Churches always fine ime

boogiewoogie · 16/08/2007 19:59

Toilets. Anywhere where you wouldn't want to eat.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/08/2007 20:07

I think it would be inappropriate to bf in a brothel, while working (unless you are just the receptionist, in which case, fine)

LittleBellatrixLeBoot · 16/08/2007 20:09

In a loo

At a rave at 3AM

On stage/ camera if you're playing a non-nursing part

hotcrumpets · 16/08/2007 20:19

I always fed DD anywhere and everywhere, but (and this might sound weird) the only place I felt slightly weird was on a topless beach in South of France

I was topless and so was everybody else even the OAP's but because I was walking around feeding her with norks completly out it just felt really weird

Can't explain it but it just did

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 20:22

At a wedding?

I jest......

I dont think it is inappropriate to breastfeed anywhere at all. Although, I wouldnt fancy b/feeding in a toilet cubicle (although mother and baby rooms with feeding facilities are often shared with toilets....

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/08/2007 20:23

"On stage/ camera if you're playing a non-nursing part "

ROFL Littlebellatrix!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 20:23

I have b/fed my born-out-of-wedlock, from atheist background, 19 month old DS in church, during a christening though.....

mezzer · 16/08/2007 20:55

I have a confession to make. I've done it. I've bf in a toilet cubicle.

But, only did it about 3 times when dd was only a couple weeks old and I was still really unsure about the whole thing. Shortly thereafter, I was bf on the bus, benches, shops, etc etc. In retrospect, it really was gross.

hunkermunker · 16/08/2007 20:59

In a baby changing room - you know, next to the nappy bin (overflowing) on the chair (hard, plastic, arms that practically meet across your lap).

Anywhere you're in room that shares a floor and ceiling with a lavatory, regardless of cubicle-age.

happimummy · 16/08/2007 21:35

It took me a while to get confident to bf in public, but am fine just about anywhere now (ds 4months)

I confess I have bf in a public loo once, but that was coz the alternative was infront of FIL and - for lots of reasons - that will NOT be happening. It was posh one though...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/08/2007 21:47

Oh I don't know Hunker - I have been in hotels a few times that have rather nice carpeted ladies' room type places with big armchairs and stuff, and fed there in preference to the room where whatever function I was at was actually taking place, although technically that would come under the category of a toilet.

harpsichordcarrier · 16/08/2007 21:50

QV and that is why you are going straight to heeeeeeeeellllllllllll

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/08/2007 22:06

Oh, I'm sure I would, if it actually existed

Difers · 16/08/2007 22:15

VVV - I breastfed at a wedding and I was a bridesmaid but fully admit it was a total bugger to get the corset type bodice off!!!

mollymawk · 16/08/2007 22:24

Not really answering the OP but I am reminded of this - my DH used to work in a firm of engineers, and one of the partners BF her baby as she was conducting an interview for a new hire.
History does not record whether the interviewee got the job.
My BF-ing on park benches/bandstands pales into insignificance against this level of cool.

LittleBellatrixLeBoot · 16/08/2007 22:33

yes really posh loos with women there to guard the expensive handwash are OK

They have big leather sofas miles from the actual cubicles and in fact, the lobby area is bigger than my sitting room

They're OK
