Baby suddenly hates the boob! Is it my period?

After exclusively breastfeeding my 8 month old son, my first period has finally decided to pay me a visit. Yay. I was prepared for the potential fussiness from him that I had read about, but what I've got is nothing short of a mystery to me and I'm hoping someone can shed some light! Basically, for every single feed since my period started (coming up to 48 hours now) he will latch on, feed quite happily, completely as normal... and then at around the 3 minute mark, he will suddenly pull off SCREAMING INCONSOLABLY. Tears streaming down his little face! Gasping silent sobs! Completely unable to comfort him whatsoever! Have to resort to distracting him with something. He refuses to relatch even when calmed or accept the other breast when offered. He has done this EVERY feed. He isn't feeding more frequently. He isn't eating any more of his solid food than normal or drinking any more water. He is sleeping as normal. I can feel my let down as normal and hear him gulping. For the first 3 minutes he is completely settled and then BAM! Meltdown time! Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any advice for me? Please and thank you in advance from one hormonal and very confused mama!

I'm not sure if it's true or not but I was told by my health visitor (I breastfed about 15 years ago) that the nutritional make up of your breast milk changes during your period - if I recall correctly it was due to your hormones making the milk seem more salty/less sweet to the baby due to an increase in sodium levels and a decrease in lactose.

Could also be teething. Or flow changes. Or an ear infection.
