36 hour old baby...

Hi there, posted yesterday about my new DS2, born yesterday morning... I have been putting him on my breast whenever he is awake since birth, so probably 7 times since 8am yesterday morning. He has however been quite sick 3 times, bright yellow colustrum sick and looking quite uncomfortable just before it happens. He has also done 2x meconium and 1 x more normal poo.. nappies seem to be dampened so i presume he's peeing ok. Um. I am just wondering when my milk will come in and if I am still doing the right thing or whether I should now after 36 hours be feeding him more like every 2-3 hours. I seem to have amnesia about what I did with DS1...thanks for any guidance as ever georgie.

Hi, I'm sure somebody with more experience will come along in a minute. I think the milk comes in at around day 3, but the more you put baby to the breast the faster it happens. So lots of cuddling, skin to skin, and let him feed as much as he wants. Congratulations on your new arrival!

The poo sounds about right for his age.

Was he suctioned at all after birth? As in, had his airway cleared?

I ask because my DS2 was vomiting some fairly Exorcist type gunge for the first 24 hours at home. And he hadn't been suctioned after birth. It stopped fairly quickly, though, after he'd cleared out his little tubes.

Feed as and when you can. If you're getting wet and dirty nappies, then it sounds OK to me. Milk can come in as late as 7 days, IIRC.

milk can take up to 5 days to come in.

But if your ds is making regular wet nappies, then sounds like he is doing fine.

Feed him as and when he wants to. That will be enough.

Try reducing your dairy intake for a few days to see if that helps the sicking up.

but actually, 7 times in 36 hours doesn't sound that much. So while feed as much as he wants is good (and the poo and wet nappies sounds on track), I don't think all babies automatically demand as much as might be desirable - if it was me I would be keen to not go more than 2-3 hours between feeds.

He may have swallowed some fluid on his way out and may still feel full. It wasn't until day three that my ds2 really stayed on the breast, and wanted to get back on 2-3 hours later.

any other views...day 3, should i be waking him every 2 hours to feed, thanks very much ladies for advice. he was awake feeding between 3.30 and 7.00... x

I would waken him 3 hourly ans see how that goes. Definitely hold him skin-to-skin as much as you can - that will stimulate him to look for feeds. Sometimes the cues are missed when they are lying in a cot.

36 hrs awww he's not even 2 days old yet He will feed when he wants/needs to. Milk will come in soon so don't worry xx Why not just stay in bed for the next couple of days if possible, lots of skin to skin and getting to know each other xxx
Mention the sickness to the midwife or your gp, possible reflux but also likely mucus.
Ds1 (8 months) was very mucusy and quite sick for the 1st few days. Lots of gagging too. It is worrying but it's the best way for them to get the mucus out.

You sound like you are doing fab
