lumps in expressed milk?

Has anyone ever had this problem. I have mastitis and altough has cleared quite a bit I still have a little blockage. Yesterday I expressed some milk and put it straight in the fridge but when I took it out 2 hours later I could see little lumps in the milk. I don't express often and never noticed this before is it normal or is it because I have mastitis? Any comments appreciated. Also many thanks for all the advise regarding mastitis it was really great to know that there are people out there who have been through thesame agonising experience and helped me decide that I could feed through it instead of starting her on formula feed.

soremummy, sorry to hear about the mastitis
can you describe the lumps? how big?

moondog · 28/07/2007 09:18

Don't know much about mastitis but someone else will.
Brilliant that your mastitis is clearing and that you are able to carry on though!

Just small bits of milk normal colour but looks as if you hadn't mixed it properly if you know what I mean. Lumps aa bit bigger than a pin head if I hadn't put it in the fridge would have said it was like when cows mils starts to turn/go off and you get the little creamy lumps in you coffee. LOL not very good at describing things sorry!

yes that sounds very normal nothing to do with the mastitis bm often separates like this.
just swirl it round a little

That's what I was thinking Harpsi.Never had mastitis but sometimes had little lumps.

My breastmilk cream used to make me laugh.

I found my milk looked really odd after a few days in the fridge & was worried about giving it to DS & someone gave me a great tip. Have a good taste & a smell of freshly expressed milk...that way you can tell straight away if any older expressed stuff has gone off. Turns out my odd looking milk was just fine - it had just separated.

Hi soremummy. I hope you are over this soon.

According to kellymom.com :

Expressed milk may look lumpy, clumpy, "gelatin-like" or stringy. This milk is fine for baby, but some moms prefer to strain the "lumps" out.

here Hope that helps
