Introducing formula to exclusively breastfed 7 month old?

Hi all,

I have exclusively breastfed my son for 7 months now (also introduced solids at 6 months), but I have become severely anaemic and drastically lost weight.

Would it be okay to combination feed - breast during the day and formula in the evening alongside his solids in the day?

I'm thinking of going for the Hipp Organic Follow-On Milk if I do...

Any advice appreciated; please be nice!

Of course it’s ok

I have had mixed success with this with my three. Outright failure with one but it’s perfectly ok to introduce it.
You’ve done really really well to ebf for seven months.

It’s sometimes trial and error with different formula and the ready made bottles are not the same

Good luck

The only formula any of mine ever took to was aptamil 1 powder. Well my first DS did my DD reluctantly took it from about 10 months and DS2 had about two months of the odd bottle of it but it was mostly spat out. 🙄
They hated any of the others even the ready made aptamil 1 bottles

Of course it's fine. Is there anything in particular that you're worried about?

materf · 27/06/2019 12:12

@Ginlinessisnexttogodliness Great, thank you! Smile

@Readytogogogo Apart from being demonised, nothing really... One thing, however, I'm concerned that he won't get the antibodies and whatever else to fortify his immune system as he did in the past. I might just be silly in thinking that?

Well he's had most of the benefit from breast milk now, but if you start mixed feeding, he'll still get your antibodies too.

Make sure you look after yourself, are you on iron tablets now?

materf · 27/06/2019 13:31

@Readytogogogo Yes. Been prescribed 210mg iron tabs. Is there anything else I can do to gain weight that you can recommend?

Eat more! Not helpful, I know. But higher calorie stuff if needed like Mac cheese etc

materf · 27/06/2019 14:07

@Readytogogogo Really, I try! I eat heartily, with a healthy appetite... Food just doesn't stay unfortunately.

My anaemia was so bad I ended up having iron transfusions
Things that make a big difference to me now are

  • blacks strap molasses on porridge
Eggs, red meat and spinach and taking my iron tablets with orange juice

If your periods have returned and they are heavy Also get this investigated as they can cause anaemia and high blood pressure which anaemia can also exacerbate!

@Ginlinessisnexttogodliness Thank you so much! I'll try that!
