Weaning

Hi all. Please don't anyone attack me. BUT. My baby was 10lb 4 born. He's huge - not really fat but just really long. He was having 80ml of expressed milk within 48 hours of birth. He's now nearly 4 months and smashed 9oz's in minutes. I'm almost making two bottles of (now formula) for him.

Seeing as we're nearing 4 months and you can give puréed food soon, I'm going to do it. I don't want to ask my health visitor for advice because I know they'll be all like 'you should wait till 6 months'. But I know my baby and I'm making this choice. He's interested in food. Can sit up unassisted etc.

So. I'm going to make my own purées and accompany feeds with milk and just see what happens really.

My question is about what we make up in the purées. I've heard people say things like, fruits for breakfast, savoury for lunch and tea. But I'm just after a bit of advice really, to make sure he gets the right amount of nutrients.

Thanks in advance xx

Hi OP,

We thought we'd just pop by as we've got a few pages on weaning that have lots of info and ideas. Have a look here

Up to 6m months babies can only have fruit and veg, if you want to wean him because you feel he's hungry then fruit and veg wont work as there aren't any calories in them! Wait until 6m as per the guidelines, protect his digestive system and then look at baby led weaning when he can eat everything except honey.

Generally it’s recommended to start with just single fruits and vegetables, you can mix in a bit of formula if needed. Usually they won’t swallow much at first and won’t have more than one or two spoonfuls at a time.

I was in a similar situation, my baby was born 10lb 2oz and was so, so hungry. We started solids at 5.5 months and he just wasn’t bothered. Didn’t really get into his food properly til about 8 months. They’re all different though!

Good luck Smile

I started at 17 weeks with baby rice. He wasnt ready so started again at 20 weeks. It really didn't do anything for his hunger until he was solidly on 3 meals a day - sorry! But it did mean by 6 months he was sleeping through.
