Formula feeding when out, help!

Little one is 3 weeks old tomorrow. Managed to breast feed and top up with ready mixed formula but breast feeding is no longer working for us. Switched to full formula 2 days ago, have perfect prep machine for home which is amazing no issues there. What do I do when we go out? Take sterile bottles.. buy those powder storage pots with correct amount in.. take a bottle of cooled sterile water (how is best to store this? In a normal bottle or is there a proper bottle to do this?) and then a flask of boiling water?.. then add powder, boiling water first and then cool sterile water appropriately to mimic perfect prep machine? Is that right and safe? Thanks in advance x

Take the ready made cartons.

Hello! I fill a sterile bottle with cooled boiled water to desired oz, I take a small Tupperware tub of formula powder with me and scoop the formula in to the water when DD is due a feed. If I'm going somewhere where there'll be no facility to warm the bottle I warm up the water before I leave and put in my Tommee Tippee insulated bottle bag, keeps warm for a few hours. Really simple and I've never had any issues. Buying pre made cartons works out very expensive IMO.

Ideally I don't want to do ready made it's too expensive we topped up using these in early days and it cost a fortune x

We took a thermos flask with hot water and then a special 3 compartment pot that you measure the scoops into. We would then make up a bottle when out and about.
This was before they brought out pre made cartons.

As above poster or tommee tippee have hot water flasks that you tip the water out in to the lid/cover and warm the water in the bottle that way. U sit the bottle in the water with water and formula powder in

Your way is how I would do it OP. Flask of boiling water, a bottle of cooled boiled water, an empty bottle and a powder dispenser with the right amount. You'll have to figure out the right ratio to make it the right temp, but basically add X amount of boiling water to the empty bottle, add all the formula and mix, then top up with the cooled boiled water to make it the perfect temp.

I would think that BearRabbit's suggestion would mean adding the powder to just cooled boiled water, which wouldn't kill off the bacteria in the powder. So your suggestion is safer as you'll be adding it to the boiling water first.

Could you breastfeed just while out?

Snipples · 06/06/2019 15:56

Yep your way is fine OP or if only out for a few hours we used to just make a couple of bottles up in the perfect prep and then shove them in the insulated tomee tippee bag things and they were grand. Our DD would take room temp so no need to heat. You can also do it with flasks like you were describing but honestly this way worked fine and all my friends did the same with no issues.

Thankyou for useful comments! I'll buy flask and formula pots and see how we go 🙂

You can make it up in advance (up to 24 hours), keep in the fridge until you go out, take it out in bottles with ice packs in an insulated bag for (I think) up to 4 hours, then warm it in hot water when you want to use it.
