6 week old dropped milk intake to approx 15oz per 24hours

Hi. He's been diagnosed with silent reflux and has been on 10mg omeprazole for a week now (was on 5mg for a week to start off with). He's getting very distressed during feeds - wants to feed but stops to cry a lot then feeds a bit more. He's barely taking an oz or two at each feed now and it's quite stressful. Prior to this he was having 4oz at each feed approx 3 hourly.

Went to GP yesterday who said it sounds like the reflux. She wants to see him again tomorrow to reassess but he examined well.

Yesterday he had a total of 17oz. Today he's had 12oz so far.

His weight last Friday was 9lbs 7oz and he had dropped from 50th to 25th percentile.. and that was prior to the reduced feeds.

He's on neocate milk and carobel thickener. Size 2 teat. We changed from MAM bottles to Dr Brown yesterday. He had a tongue tie snipped at 3.5weeks.

The only recent changes are that we've started with colic calm gripe water and this seems to be helping his wind and crying episodes.

Prior to the carobel he had Gaviscon in his feeds but the reduced intake started happening on the Gaviscon. My gut instinct is that the carobel keeps him a bit more settled.

Can anyone reassure me?

To me it sounds like a food intolerance, he drinks, gets stomach ache when the allergy flares as the food hits his stomach, so he cries and fusses, but is hungry so keeps eating and repeat. The neocate cant be causing it, so maybe the carobel. I would talk to the doctor about stripping it all down to just neocate and nothing else for a day, and then if that doesnt improve anything, adding back one element at a time. You should also be referred to a pediatrician

That's interesting.. will give that a shot. We are due to see paediatrician a week tomorrow 👍

He's just had a feed and not screamed.. was rooting and clearly hungry but just had 1oz then dozed off. Sneezed during the feed too.

Would there be such an instant impact if there is an intolerance to carobel? Interestingly that's when the issues started ..

Yes there would be an instant impact. And then there would also be a steady improvement for the last bit over a week orso, depending upon how much gut damage was caused in the first place.

Fingers crossed you have cracked it

@SeaToSki thank you for your post. We think we've got to the bottom
Of it. He had his tongue tie snipped at 3.5 weeks and it just popped into my head that it would be good to rule
Out any issues with it. Well it turns out it had reattached! He had it snipped and drank 4oz straight after within 10 mins! Thank you for your support Smile
