Putting bottles in the dishwasher

I have been putting little ones bottles and breast pump etc in the dishwasher since he was 6 weeks old. I had read at the time that the DW would sterilise the things completely. just to be safe though after theyve been in the DW i sterilise them in the steam steriliser thinger. friend said the other day though that she had heard that the DW isnt suitable until they are 1 because of the detergent. has anyone else heard this? Little boy is still only 5 months so am bit worried now.

i always washed bottles/pump etc in the dishwasher then sterilised too

had no problems and didn't hear anything about detergent (i have 2 DDs)

i stopped sterilising on top of dishwasher the minute they were mobile putting things in their mouths!

In the US they only use dishwasher, rarely sterilise.

so, i am sure the d/w will be fine.

the dishwasher on its own is fine, no need to sterlise afterwards.

You only need to put them through the dishwasher on the top shelf. All the detergent gets really well washed off during the rinse cycles. So much easier than faffing around with the steriliser.

Actually if you do a search of old threads there is an interesting one about whether or not you actually need to sterilise as long as you wash with hot water and air dry.

In 3 years of paranoid parenting, I have never heard anybody say that dishwasher detergent was a problem.

Only problem I've found with putting bottles etc in the dishwasher is on days when we've had tomato based sauces, the plastic ends up pink!
However, that isn't a problem that worried me terribly and ds didn't say "ah'm no drinking oot a pink bottle maw"

this is a strange question to ask but after putting one of DS's bottles in the dishwasher today i had a quick taste of the milk from the bottle (my breast milk) and it tasted quite soapy. or if soapy isnt the word then im not sure how to describe it, it just tasted different to when i had tried the milk which had dribbled directly from my boob)does BM taste differently from a bottle or is this perhaps something to do with my dishwasher?

also was telling my hubby about this thread and he said is it defo ok to put the teats in the DW as well as perhaps this is why they tasted a bit strange?

i never had this problem and yes i put the teats in too.
why don't you just rinse with boiling water before use if you're not 100% sure they are being thoroughly rinsed of detergent.
