How long does a tin of formula last?

How much formula does your LO go through a week on average?

My nearly 6mo DD3 has prescription formula (still 800g tin and makes up same quantities) and it doesn't quite last a week. She's combi fed (although not much bm milk) and a tin really only lasts for 6 days - spend my life expressing to eek it out for a week.

She gets 4 tins every 4 weeks and several times we've had to ask for an early repeat. We've been told by the GP that a tin should last a week - stating that as baby grows they have larger but less bottles and so a tin will always last a week. Although the GP did acknowledge growth spurts and poorliness. We've been "allowed" to have an early repeat a couple of times but it's been strongly implied that we'd be in trouble if it kept happening...not sure what they'd do exactly!!

I'm just wondering if the GP is right or if we actually need a bit more than a tin a week. As it happens she's not a huge eater and usually has about 5 x 6oz bottles, although sometimes 7oz. My other children didn't need prescription formula so I don't recall how much they went through, we just bought it when we needed it.

We found it lasted just less than a week too.

My little sisters always lasted just less than a week too. Our doctors were similarly odd and said they'd have to stop giving us repeat prescriptions as it looked like they were oversupplying us. I think we bought it from an online pharmacy then, so we had some spares, but in hindsight, I should have discussed it with the doctor more!

Just less than a week here too, but once he started weaning he needed less milk so it started to even out and there was some left over at the end of the 4 weeks. I presume you’ve only just started solids but once he’s eating more you’ll notice a difference

Starting solids probably at the weekend, not quite 6 months until end of next week. So yes I'm guessing it'll soon taper off a bit and be ok anyway.

I was thinking of mentioning it to the GP but wanted to gauge other people's experiences first before I'm told that I'm wrong. Just looking at the tin it even says that some babies may need more (of course). For her age she should be having 5 x 7oz bottles a day (35oz), or more likely 4 x 8oz a day (32oz) but is actually having 5 x 6oz bottles a day (30oz). If she's using up the tin in just under a week then it's never going to be enough. I've always "known" that but figured I must be making extra somewhere, not really believing that I was!
