Which nipple shields?

So I have flat nipples and large breasts (currently wearing a 36H maternity bra). I can’t get DD (10 days old) to latch.

I’ve got some models nipple shields but I’m not getting along with them. Any recommendations?

I use the Mandela ones, I think they have different sizes, I find them easy to use and clean. I haven’t tried any others so I can’t offer comparisons but I like this brand.

Whoops meant to say I’ve got the Medela ones but I can’t get them to stay on and DD won’t latch but I’m wondering if the shields are the issue or her positioning?

The shields might be causing the issue. Have you tried to shape your breast tissue to help the latch? Sometimes getting a partner to help with this is necessary.

Have you got the correct size? My DP bought mine and neither of us realised they came in small/med and large. Dp bought large which were far too big for dd to be able to latch on to.

Ah - it could be your technique using them?

When I went to breastfeeding support this was their advice:

  • pop the shield inside out first (hard to explain) to get good suction
  • pull it wide over the nipple, really stretch the plastic to get as much of the tissue into the shield as possible
  • make sure your baby opens his mouth really wide
  • position baby parallel to your body in a straight line and keep them really closely tucked in

Hope that helps!!

Get on amazon and order lots of different makes. I have small boobs and small nipples and it took me a while to find ones that me fit well (Mandela small).

How are you getting on, OP? I really liked the Boots own shields.

I use the mam ones and they're excellent!
