How bad should a nappy smell?

DS is seven weeks, over the last couple of weeks he has been increasingly windy, often with what I think is trapped wind after feeds, (wriggling, unsettled, tries to climb over your shoulder) he doesn't burp easily. I tried gripe water didn't work made him scream more.
Don't really want to start guessing and giving him infacol, colief, then gaviscon etc SIL has done this, her baby is no better but now gets visible tummy pain and constipation too. DS is very dribbly, farts quite a lot (sometimes unsettled before, sometimes not and also farts in his sleep) and when he does it smells. He has gone over the last few weeks from several bowel movements a day to one every couple of days, but when he goes it's huge amounts and reeks. Today's made me gag. He is breast and bottle fed. Is this normal and he just gets a bit of trapped wind or does it sound like something else? He was a happy little thing and now is often unsettled unless feeding or asleep.

I did mention some of this to the GP at his did week check but honestly she's pretty disinterested, she didn't book me in for my PP GTT, forgot to even mention it until I did, she also speaks very dismissively about the HV. I'm taking DS to get weighed Friday, so will chat to HV then but just rented other tips/experience in the mean time.

Mine is EBF and 17 weeks and his smell quite bad for a BF baby I think, he's also quite windy! What helps with wind for us (as I didn't want to go down the giving him stuff route either) is holding him in a sling or upright. It also improves with age generally so you might find it resolves/improves over the next few weeks - it did for us.

I had a very similar experience with my combi fed baby and think it started around the 8 week mark. I think it was his gut moving from a newborn, going multiple times a day, to a more ‘adult’ pattern. A few times he went 4 days without pooping and the smell was horrendous Envy (not envy!) I assume because it had been hanging around his gut for so long. He’s now 17 weeks and goes every 1-2 days and the smell is a lot less dreadful!

I fed formula and expressed milk. He got really constipated when we switched from the tiny bottles of aptimil to powdered formula. Think this was about 8 weeks. He was going several times a day then suddenly went once every 3 days. It stank. He was windy and unhappy. We switched to comfort milk and things got a lot better. Also recommend baby massage to get things moving and relieve wind. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water to make sure he gets plenty of hydration fro lm your milk. We found infacol very useful for wind.
