been told by a friend who is bf a now 6 wk old (but born at 30 wks) that when she was still struggling to latch him properly, if she relaxed put her ds on her chest and relaxed and let him 'get on with it' he achieved a better latch than her efforts of latching him on.

Thanks for the warning kiskidee. I am not normally terribly emotional, but for some reason, I now have tears streaming down my cheeks. That is such a lovely video. Will be sure to try it if I have another baby. Thank you

my midwife did this for me. when dd was born she said i said i wanted her put to my chest, but then didn't know what to do next. midwife said, you don't need to do anything. just rest, baby will find your nipple. and she did, she wiggled and wiggled, then latched on.

lol! i watched it with a roomful of teenage boys during their lunch time and could feel myself welling up. good thing they were noisy and not paying attention to me. had i payed full attention.....

wow. incredible and really moving. makes you wish taht we were sometimes left alone to allow our newbies to discover our bodies for themsleve without the pressue to getthem to feed asap. i wante to deliver my placenta myself and was told i HAD to get her to feed in the first 10 mins. i didt - and so - started the feelings of bf failure!
if only i could have given her the chance to do it like this wee trooper did.

am gonna forward this to many now too!

I remember being in awe when my ds 'found' my nipple in bed one night when he was a few weeks old.

It must be absolutely awesome to have that happen after birth.

That's lovely. I ahd a big at the round of applause when the baby got there.

Next time, next time it will be different. I won't let myself be swept along, completely out of my mind with just having given birth and in no frame of mind to make a fuss about my baby being taken away to be washed and wrapped. I didn't attempt to feed ds until about 2 hours after he was born and I'd seen a similar video while I was pregnant and had planned to have the whole skin-to-skin, feed immediately etc.

Oh well, the flat nips thing would have probably stopped ds latching in any case (I do find it amusing that these days I find myself if I see a page three pic or similar "oh they're great bf breasts"). And we got there in the end!

I was woken up this morning at 5am by ds2 (9wks) sucking on my nipple!

Post birth was horrendous for me, was in agony and just plonked on the bed then left for over an hour. Managed abit of a feed but not really But has obviously all worked out ok and he doesnt stop feeding now!

Was so lovely to see that video though and I really had no idea how important it is to feed within first half hour.

DD2 was a bit like this she came out had a cry was given to me I showed her a boob she latched on and that was her for the next year bless her. She had her first feed whilst still attached to me. I had to tell MWs not to cut the cord, no syntometrin and just to leave her naked next to me. As she was my second and a homebirth I think they just left me to get on with it.

tipex, maybe your feelings towards her and her birth are all cultural values?

eg, lots of cultures in the east do not use soft beds or pillows.

this woman may have agreed to have lots of people at this birth (as we get asked if student midwives could attend a birth) to show how breast crawl actually happens. These women quite probably were traditional birth attendants or even more conventionally trained midwives.
