Baby getting very upset at feeding time

Our little boy is 4 months old now and has always fed little and often (had a tongue tie at the start which was cut at 6 weeks but we wondered if he'd got into the habit of eating small amounts little and often as he struggled to feed). He's being breast fed with some expressed milk from a bottle on the odd occasion.
Despite the regularity, little one has got into a routine which seemed to work well, however in the last couple of weeks he doesn't seem to be eating as much, particularly during the day, he give us signs that he's hungry but then starts to feed and stops after about 30 seconds, unfortunately this sometimes causes him to get squirted with milk, after which he refuses to go back on. We get to the end of the day and he doesn't seem to have eaten much (although still lots of wet nappies so don't think he's dehydrated) and this can result in lots of frenzied feeding at night time.

We've tried letting off a bit of milk at the start using a pump to see if this encourages him to stay on the breast, but not sure if this is helpful or not. Just wondering if there is anything we can do to encourage little one to persevere with feeds through the day?

(weight and growth all fine at last health visitor check approx 2 weeks ago).

Any thoughts much appreciated.
