DS is BF & on 3 solid meals a day - what else & how much should he be getting to drink?

When dd (who was ff) was small I remember the HV telling a bf mum that her dd didn't need anything except food (she was weaning) & boob as her breast milk would adapt to cater more for baby's thirst than hunger. Is this right? I would have though that baby would still need drinks of water or juice as well. I really need to know as ds is now 7 months & up to 3 meals a day & I don't want him to get dehydrated if I've picked this up wrong.

I will be watching this with interest. My mum is obsessed with ds getting water so I give him some in a sippy cup occasionally but he's not really interested and mostly just chews the spout.

Going by his nappies, he seems to be getting plenty liquid in so I think he's fine with mainly bm (I feed him roughly 4/5 times a day). He's 7 months.

I didn't start my DD on water till about 9 months when I went back to work, and even then it was only the odd sip with meals. If your DS is eating plenty of fruit and veg he's getting plenty of water from there too. I wouldn't worry too much, take your cue from your DS, if he's happy and healthy the way he is then there's no need for anything else.

I think its kellymom that talks about this....from memory it seems it depends on the baby. Most will be fine at this stage with just bm & solids, but some will get a bit constipated & may need extra fluids. How is your DS's nappies? Plenty of wet ones still? Poos still soft?

...off to find the kellymom link...

Phew! Thanks everyone, that's a relief. He still has loads of really soggy nappies (he wears cloth so it's easy to tell lol) & his poos are softish tho' not runny thank god. He gets at least 4-5 feeds from me a day plus he still feeds at night too so I think I'll leave it as it is for now & try him with water in a cup when he's a little older.
