Nipple Cream

I remember on a thread ages ago that someone recommended a nice nipple cream that the baby didn't object to.

Don't suppose anyone can remember the name? I think it began with a 'C'.

Also, I bought some breast pads at the weekend (the J&J ones) - they are HUUUUGE. Do they have to be that big?

Lansinoh is good. Medela also make a good one.

Can 't think wht it is called but it has camomille and I think is Cam???? it is very good Used to be in a yellow packet

lasinoh has a good press on here. i always used kamillosan, it works as a nappy rash cream too.

When I had sore nipples, though, the midwives just put gelonet (a dressing of gauze and vaseline, basically)on between feeds, sorted out our latch and it cleared up.

I tried Kamillosan first but no joy. Then Lansinoh which was brilliant. However that was for a cracked nipple, not just soreness. Lansinoh also works wonders on dry hands and lips.

Purelan?

IF you need nipple cream - but you may not! then Lansinoh or Purelan are better than Kamillosan.
Also as you are in Canada, Dr Jack Newman sells a very good cream called the all purpose nipple ointment or cream and I knwo Candians swear by it... he is Canadian so you could find it there (probably on-line).

Almost 40 -Medela makes Purelan... both are 100% lanolin nothing else. Some people are allergic to camomille BTW.

Purelan, that's it! Agree with Pupuce - should stay with the pure 100% lanolin. I thought they were both great - Purelan and Lansinoh. I suppose they were the same exact thing in different packaging.

Kamillosan - can't recommend it enough and I really, really needed it!!!

went to pharmacy and they had all the brands. Got Lansinoh as the packet made me laugh.

Tissy - we don't use Kamillosan anymore, but jelonet instead. If jelonet doesn'e help Lansinoh (or purelan) is the cream to use nowadays.

Highlander, pay a lot of attention to the position and latch of the baby. If that is right, you shouldn't need cream (some people still do though but not automatically).

mears- I wasn't suggesting Kamillosan, just trying to guess which cream highlander meant! As you can see one of your colleagues gave me gelonet, and that was over 2 years ago!

It is recommended that any nipple cream should be 100% lanolin which kamillosan is not. For a while nipple creams were out of favour because they promoted the thought that nipple damage is inevitable and women used it to prevent damage. If nipples did become sore/cracked, creams really didn't promote healing often, they kept the nipple in a mush. More emphasis was placed on correctly positioning and attaching babies. If babies were correctly fixed, nipple damage should be avoided. If nipples did bwecome sore it was advised they were exposed to the air to heal, perhaps with EBM rubbed on. However, it was realised that moist healing is best for cracked skin (just like chapped lips) and the best thing to use is 100% lanolin which is superabsorbed, not like kamillosan.
I used kamillosan myself but it didn't half stink. Initially when manufactured it had peanut oil in it so they had to reformulate it because of possible subsequent peanut allergy.
It can be used for sore bottoms but IME I think it made nappy rash worse.
Lansinoh is used for creacked nipples where I work. It is not put on to prevent damage - care is taked to fix baby correctly. It is only used if a problem develops.

thanks mears. i used kamillosan following damage (raw, broken nipples which ebm didn't touch, as it were) and it felt good - slightly numbing iykwim - that smell is soooo evocative, will always remind me of those first few months. i had heaps of help with positioning etc but dd1 didn't get it till about 3 mths in (we looked like we were doing it right) and then things were fine. much quicker with dd2 and far fewer nipple problems. i find metanium much better on bots too but still have the odd tube of kamillosan floating around. do you know what other stuff they put in it?

(also have fond memories of stuffing tea strainer into bra to keep off the pressure from healing nipple )

Not sure what else is in it. I do remember peeling off breastpads and having to wipe off remnants of kamillosan. I think that the coolness of applying it was the only benefit. It was the same with Rotasept (sp?) spray - it felt cool but did bu**er all to heal nipples - infact it destroyed normal skin flora making infection more likely.

i found that kamillosan really stung.only used it once, and after I had peeled myself off the ceiling (!) i binned it! Lanisoh really worked for my raw bleeding nipples.It's expensive,but you only need a tiny bit don't you?

don't worry mears - I've only bought it as a standby, I promise I won't use it as a preventative measure!
