Teat size

Hi all,

Just looking for advice on bottle teat size...

We are using the NUK anti-colic bottles with the medium teat (this is the first formula size teat... The small teat is for breast milk only).

DS is 6wo and currently takes over an hour (sometimes two) for 5ozs. He can be quite fussy on the bottle and pulls around alot.
I've tried the next size up and he drank his milk in under ten minutes.. is that normal?

My DS suffers with reflux which is why we've stuck with the slow teat and super slow feeds, but to be honest he's still sick regardless of the teat size.

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I haven't used NUK bottles, I use DR Brown's..but the recommendations for bottle feeding is a feed should take between 20 - 40 minutes for babies up to three months.
Mine takes about 15 minutes.

I had issues with colic and being sick his bottles. Have you tried colic drops? Give them before a feed and see if that helps? Just check the flow also. Sometimes if you screw the bottle too tight, it doesn't come out properly! This may of been happening with the babies first teat.

I think second size teats are for six month plus..so this will be way too much milk too fast at this age

Oh and an hour to two hours for five ounces is ridiculous! That must be draining for you 😔
Mine use to mess about with the bottle in his mouth also.

The HV advised me to wait until he is really hungry, and then if he starts faffing around or nodding off, try and keep him alert and try and get him to drink it. It worked in the end and started having full feeds..instead of an ounce then a nap for 10 minutes then wanting another ounce. Try sitting the baby upright more aswell..
Hope that helps!

Hi OP. I had exactly the same problem with my DS and medium hole Nuk teats. He was even falling asleep half way through the feed. Bought large hole teats and then he was drinking too fast and had more wind and reflux. DH sterilised a needle and put an extra hole in medium hole teat. Magic! Worked a treat.
