Changed 5 week old to Aptamil Comfort (colic & constipation)

Hi - my 5 week old has been extremely unsettled, screaming non stop in the day and following advice from my HV I have moved him onto Aptamil Comfort - colic and constipation. He’s not constipated so we’re on this purely for colic.

His pumps absolutely stink now! Will this remain the whole time he’s on the comfort milk?

Also, how long should he take the milk before we start seeing an improvement...if there even is one? He’s not done 24 hours yet so I am fully aware it’s very early days!

Please help an exhausted Mum 😓

Although Comfort milk works for some, I think you’d be better finding out the reason for the screaming. Has anyone mentioned Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)?

Has he ever been checked for Tongue Tie too?

Ask Dr Sears has some tips for coping with Colic. Hope you find something that works for you Thanks

How does tongue tie affect colic?

My 5wo has something similar and we were told at the hospital he had a tie at the top of his tongue (at the back of his mouth) and they wouldn't do anything about it.

Could this be causing colic/possible reflux?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/11/2018 06:48

Could this be causing colic/possible reflux?. Yes! It’s because they can’t get a proper seal around the bottle or feed efficiently of they’re bf and end up taking in tonnes of air. It can cause reflux type symptoms, affect sleep, Weaning, speech and even facial development.

Did they say why they won’t divide?

Waterfoot · 29/11/2018 20:32

Apparently because it is an anterior tongue tie (at the back of his mouth) they said it wouldn't effect his speech of anything like that?

He did have real trouble latching to my breast without nipple shields and now we have moved onto the NUK bottles he mostly feeds well on those but is sometimes fussy when eating (not to mention it takes AT LEAST 40 minutes for him to eat 5ozs!)

Waterfoot · 29/11/2018 21:02

Ignore that - apparently it's not at the back of the mouth. My husband seems to think I imagined that on my post-birth delirium.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/11/2018 21:13

How are you getting on now Mummy?

Mummy081212 · 29/11/2018 21:28

Actually a lot better thank you. My boy has been on the milk since Monday and he is definitely more settled. We don’t have the piercing screams anymore and the inability to settle him. He is feeding well. Thank you for asking.

Pumps and poos are VERY smelly though 🙈

So glad things are improving. Did you get chance to read the link on Milk Allergy? What did you think?

IchHabeDurst · 30/11/2018 15:09

Glad to hear things are improving Smile As JiltedJohnsJulie said, CMPA is something that would be good to rule out. The comfort milk has a reduced lactose content which can make it easier for babies with underlying CMPA (and those without) to digest, which stops the screaming but not the tummy troubles. So although he's now doing better there's a chance he could improve further still. The fact that his poos and pumps still smell terrible could be a symptom.

Also, you may find your little boy's poos now go a dubious shade of dark green. That's because of the iron content in the comfort formula though and not because there's anything wrong with him. I only mention it as your situation mirrors that of my son and it confused me when I saw his first green poo!

I know this post is old but just chancing my luck! I switched to comfort milk a few days ago for my little girl as we thought she had colic. Her pumps are now VERY SMELLY lol. Does this persist? She seems to be straining to get pumps out too and isn’t doing a poo as regularly as she was before!

Zarra · 05/02/2024 05:38

Same. I moved my daughter on aptamil comfort. Although she is much more setteld, her farts stinks soo much n her dirty nappies have gone down to once a day and yesterday she did not even have any dirty nappy. I am soo worried. How is it going for you. Please do share ur experince.

Not sure about anyone else but we stopped the comfort milk after about a week. She was in so much discomfort passing wind that she was waking herself up every 45 mins through the night & she was badly constipated! we started using gaviscon instead albeit only a tiny amount in each bottle to help with constipation!

Hi, I’ve just switched to Aptamil comfort. I’m adding the feeds In gradually but not sure if I should just do a complete swap and stop giving the old formula. What have you done? X
