Hungry Baby Milk; a vomit or constipation story.

Hello! Brace yourself, this is a bit of a novel.

So, my LO has been combi-fed since around four months. I found it really hard to express, so we introduced formula after she dropped down past the 1% on her chart. I just don’t think my BM was enough for her regardless of feeding every two hours. We tried so many different brands but she would bring so much up. We spoke to our HV about her having reflux, but she recommended trying a thicker formula before getting formula on prescription, as sometimes the pharmacies can run out; so it would be handy to have an easier option.
Enter SMA Extra Hungry Baby! It was a Godsend. The spewing stopped. The screaming stopped, and for the last three months it’s been absolute heaven. She’s just so happy, and obviously satisfied after her feeds. The only problem is poop. I wouldn’t say she’s struggling to pass, but they’re pretty well “formed”. We never have nappy explosions or anything.
Now she’s started eating solids, I make sure she gets a little water along with her meals in an attempt to soften her stools. Nothing seems to be doing the trick, so I thought maybe it’s the formula? Maybe her gut is ready to have normal formula since she’s so good at eating everything!
Enter SMA Pro (just the regular version of the brand she already takes); we’ve given her it all day today and she’s just spewing all over the place. Does this sound like reflux and a trip to the GP or that she’ll need to get used to the change? I’m more than happy to go back to Hungry Baby Milk, but I’m worried the harder stools means she’s constipated; even if it doesn’t hurt her to pass them.

Sorry, total ramble but I’m at a bit of a loss right now and wondering what you guys would do yourself? Naturally I’ll take her to our GP regardless, but looking for some opinions Smile TIA xoxo

I have no experience but could you try introducing the EMA pro slowly? Maybe just one bottle a day to begin with, then two, then alternating the two milks? And keep it at the balance at which she is no longer constipated but hasn't spewed yet.

That’s definitely the goal, to find a happy balance. I’m worried about mucking her around too much with different formulas, and she’s still breastfed too, so that’s another factor to be scheduled in with it.
You’re right though. It’s probably better to do this, than just changing the milk all of a sudden. Thank you!

It's ok to have formed stools as long as they aren't dry or hard. I'd go back to the original formula

Hungry baby milk made DD really constipated. She struggled massively to go. If she needs thicker milk do SMA do a 'comfort' or 'reflux' version? Both slightly thicker than normal formula. And defo do a slow switch over otherwise her guts will struggle

Yeah, they’re not like little dry hard ones, they’re almost like peanut butter that’s been in the fridge, if that makes any sense? Minimal wiping, very little mess. Every poop guide I’ve read about online shows much more watery stools, so that’s why I was worried. Like I said, it doesn’t hurt her to pass them but all the advice is so conflicting!

And in regards to the anti-reflux/comfort versions; we’ve tried them, and had the same messy, spewy results! I bought the Hungry Baby formula again yesterday and I’ve been alternating between them. Poops look much more liquid, but we’ve been through plenty of outfits due to the vomit! Can’t win, haha!

Consistency sounds fine tbh. As long as they aren't dry and hard then I wouldn't worry

@dementedpixie That’s good to hear. Every other mama I know has regular poop explosions and very messy nappies, so I didn’t know what to think.
