Where to point the nipple?

I’m watching some breastfeeding YouTube videos and I don’t understand something probably fairly simple.
It says to point the nipple to the baby’s nose, but surely eventually it points the the mouth and goes in ?

What have I missed Grin

I was told (and did) to point the nipple at the roof of the babe's mouth. It needed to be pointing upwards for the baby to get a good latch and to be able to milk the breast efficiently.

Weirdly, aim for the nose and it all goes well. Grin

Also pointing to the nose means the baby opens their mouth wide so you can get lots of breast into the mouth.

I’m a hairdresser and never good with theory - I need a head of hair to learn something new.

I’ve a feeling this makes more sense when my baby is in front of me lol

It will make more sense when your baby is in front of you! But the nose to nipple thing really does work. They naturally tip their heads to a good position and open their mouths wide. You don't want them to just take the nipple, they need to take a good bit of the breast.

Brilliant.

My first baby due in January - I'm slowly getting more confidence in my choices

Eek !!

Tummy to mummy, nipple to nose.

Twee but true!

It does make more sense with an actual baby, I promiseGrinFlowers

I actually though you just dropped the nipple in baby's mouth while you held it like a normal baby.

Th tummy thing is interesting

Best advice I ever got was on here and I breastfed my dd until she was almost 3.
Hold your boob as though it was a burger aim the nipple towards her nose and she should latch on.

puddingjuly · 25/10/2018 14:52

Yeah and her tummy over your tummy x

If you point/lightly brush the babies nose with the nipple they should, in theory, open wide and tilt their head back, you then just kind of shove the nipple in. I found it easier if I sandwiched the nipple between my fingers to make it a bit pointier.

Thanks for all this information.

I've got a surprise unplanned baby and I wasn't happy at first because I was very sick in the beginning, and now I'm getting excited and things.

It's so nice to talk about this all now !

Congratulations :)

Yep! Another good thing to remember for the cradle hold is to keep baby's ear, shoulder and hip in a straight line :)
