Expressed milk confusion

FuchsiaG · 24/10/2018 12:06

I have started to express small amounts of milk and storing it ready for any times that I need to give the baby a bottle. However, I asked a midwife if I can mix milk from different expressed sessions into the same containers but she said no, they have to all be stored seperately. As I'm only expressing small amounts am I able to combine these to make up a whole bottle? Otherwise there will only ever be a small trickle in each bottle.

Thanks for any help, I'm feeling very confused about feeding and expressing.

You can combine milk. You can also pour cooled fresh milk on top of frozen and re-freeze. What amounts are you talking about? I find it best to store in 2-3oz batches to reduced wastage when you come to use it.

You can absolutely put milk into one bottle from more than one pumping session.

I combine mine as i only get 30-50ml per session and baby needs at least 100 for a feed. Never occurred to me it would be a problem.

You absolutely CAN, even the milk bank accepts milk this way.

Shelley54... I added a "not" into your sentence when I read it, sorry!

Fantastic, thank you all very much. I was wondering how I would ever have enough to fill a bottle. Currently I’m only expressing about 30-50mls at a time as I’m only pumping for 10 minutes at a time.

Also, you only need sterilise your pump once a day in the morning. Keep the bits in the fridge and take them out when you need them. Saves so so much time!

Rubbish you absolutely can add milk together from different sessions. My mums a midwife and what she told me to do was to put my milk into ice cube tray (each cube is half an oz) and then when you got a sizeable amount (I did 4ozs) I would put the cubes into a bag! Really handy as I'd express sometimes only 1oz

30-50mls is a good amount for 10mins, keep doing what you're doing.
