Newborn breastfeeding - normal pain?

DD2 born early this morning :) planning on exclusively breastfeeding as I did with DD1. However had an awful start with DD1; posterior tongue tie, cracked nipples, thrush, mastitis! It was agony for weeks and weeks.
I'm planning on seeing a lactation consultant next week and attending local breastfeeding support groups also, but in the meantime I'm just wondering what to expect.
Baby's mouth is tiny and my nipples are huge Shock trying the flipple technique which I found useful with DD1 but only from around 6 weeks. We're a few feeds in and already it feels sore and like a shallow latch. However, I do understand from friends who have breastfed with no big issues that some soreness in the first few weeks is to be expected!
I don't want to freak out at what is a normal pain/soreness and get myself all worked up in my hormonal state Grin
Any feeding tips for newborns, especially for those with big bosoms and small babes, would also be much appreciated! :)

As this is your second journey the pain for the first few weeks should be less because your tendons are already stretched.
"Normal" pain should disappear quickly after baby has latched and should only last a few weeks. If pain is intense and lasts the duration of a feed this may indicate a latch problem. How are your nipples when baby unlatches? Any lipstick shape or loss of colour? You may want to try laid back feeding to achieve that deeper latch.
Congratulations on the new arrival!

Congrats on baby! I had the same amount of pain with dc2 as with dc1 but it disappeared at 6 weeks. I'm very grateful I persevered as it has given me more time to spend with dc1 and we can all snuggle together while feeding to read a book (or 6).

Pain is intense and lasts the duration of the feed :( I know it's her latch as it's exactly the same as with DD1 who had a shallow latch. I can feel her hard gums on my nipple Confused I keep trying laid back feeding and also did with my first but have never got the hang of it. Will find out where I can go for some support on Monday and maybe dig out the nipple shields for the time being! 🙈
