Does giving a dummy help colic/affect breast feeding?

Hello,

I have a 3 month old boy who has had bad colic everyday since about 4 weeks and is EBF I have been told by many people that dummies can help with colic and finally tried a flat one tonight which I must admit has seemed to help calm him and settle him to sleep, HOWEVER I am quite worried that this will affect the amount he breastfeeds as already tonight he has fed considerably less than he normally would before bed, today he has fed a fair amount in the day- slightly more than usual I would say so not sure if this is connected to the dummy or not?! Was just wondering if anyone else has used dummies with EBF babies and what your experiences are with how it did or didn't affect their feeds?

Thank you SmileBrew

I've had three babies all EBF and all loved their dummies. They've all grown on their centiles properly. Don't worry about it, especially at 3 months. I think they say it at the beginning to not use them because it's about establishing supply but it'll be fine by now!

I didnt breast feed but the dummy was needed. We had bad colic and under specialist care and all the consultants mentioned the benefits of dummy

I've used dummies with both EBF babies with no issues.

I feel it also helped to get them to accept bottles at a later stage when I wanted to leave them to do Stuff.

It might be that rather than feeding less he is actually comfort sucking less (I.e. not using you as a human dummy now he has an actual dummy)

The dummy was my life saver with ds2! Definitely helped with colic and didn’t interfere with bf (he also took the occasional bottle from a couple of months). He’s now 11 and still fondly remembers his “do-do”!

I haven't read previous responses but if a dummy is helping your baby then so for it. Sucking helps them deal with big emotions. Keep an eye on weight gain and nappy out put but if all is good then keep doing what you are doing.
