Does anyone elses DC 'prefer' one breast to another, OR do you find it easier to feed on one side than the other......

just wondering really (while DC3 is asleep and DH has taken the other DS's out to the park for the afternoon) as I'm not sure whether he prefers my left breast to my right (as he latches on much quicker and stays on it longer) , or it's because I'm lefthanded that I find it harder to get him latched onto my right side (and he doesn't stay on for so long).

Oh and as an aside..............how many of you have the joy of trying to faff with the Avent breastpump (which you hadn't had out of it's box for 3 1/2yrs) at 4am in the morning because one of you breasts was so full you were in agony and DC couldn't latch on and you just needed to let some milk out .

Me me me!!! Left is so much easier and I've had all my problems with blocked ducts etc on the right.

I'm left handed too but I read somewhere that most people find the left easier & obv most people are right handed so I don't know if handedness is linked.

I'm right handed, and found feeding with my left side much more easier and more comfortable. I was told it was my positioning that made the difference. After 16 months I still couldn't figure out what I was doing differently on the right side.

bf more from my left side as I'm right handed & could do things whilst lo slept & bf.

mummynumnum · 02/06/2007 20:17

Def my right-side when sitting up, always found left side awkward. If co-sleeping prefer feeding on the left side.

A chiropracter told me that sometimes it can be because the baby is feeling a bit uncomfotable on one side so they prefer the side thats the comfiest. She actively advertised babies prefering one breast as something she helps. Not sure how true this is but sort of makes sense. I know if I had a stiff neck or bask I would do what was easiest.

think dd prefers right side, i seem to feed her much more this side. left side she keeps dropping off and her latch isn't as strong, can't really get a satisfactory feed from there and we both seem a bit uncomfortable. doesn't worry me though...

ProfYaffle · 03/06/2007 16:25

Both my dd's have preferred my left breast. I prefer it too because it leaves my right hand free to do other things.

yomellamoHelly · 03/06/2007 16:44

Always give ds2 my left boob first for 7am feed so I can eat my breakfast with my right hand. Otherwise no preference really.

madoldcatlady · 03/06/2007 17:18

I fed DD3 exclusively from the right side for 12 months! She (at a few days old) point blank refused to latch on to the left breast. No idea why. Surprisingly I never had any problems with leaking from the unused breast, or engorgement either, it just dried up. I'm left handed too.

Oops!

ds2 prefers the right side, and i'm right-handed

when i've expressed feeds i find i can get more from the right side too

cece · 03/06/2007 18:02

I found right breats easiest but don't remember eiother dc prefering one or the other. i am right handed so think I found it easier to hold them on that side. Plus on that side my nork is a bit smaller and has nicer nipples

tassis · 03/06/2007 18:04

I find left handed easier...

Attach to left boob, hold with left arm, leaves firght hand free to do stuff!

lancarra · 03/06/2007 19:26

left in day, right at night I have more milk in right but it is easier to feed from this side at night. My ds 3 decided to feed his way ds 4 takes the longest feeds from the right, consequently this boob is not only going south it is also going east as well

ProfYaffle · 03/06/2007 19:30

I feed dd2 more off her preferred breast, largely because when we're out and about she kicks up a MASSIVE fuss if I try to use the 'bad' breast, and my supply seems to have adjusted, I don't get engorged on the neglected side.

Egg · 03/06/2007 19:33

I fed off my right a lot more than my left. DS seemed to prefer it and I think I found it easier. However now I wish I had not let it happen as he seems to have sucked the life out of the right one and it is smaller than the left . I stopped breastfeeding nearly a year ago.

And yes, I was often there with the Avent hand pump in the middle of the night (usually 3am for me) .
