My LG was born 9 weeks early we spent 6 and a half weeks in the NICU. We got home on Monday. I am breastfeeding her on demand and she has two bottles of my milk a day with fortifier in as she had issues with weight gain but we are weaning off these in the next two weeks. In hospital I was expressing after every feed and have now been told to wean off pumping because she will be exclusively breastfed (ie no bottles) in a couple of weeks.
At the moment I am still pumping around 4 times a day never in the night because she cluster feeds anyway so would be hard to fit it in. I get about 80 ml off each boob in the morning probably because I haven’t expressed all night.
Anyways in the day i feed her and my boob is still full I could easily express about 30-40ml off after each feed. I’m worried that she isn’t taking enough? Also we use a nipple shield and I worry this stops her getting full.. the shield is always full of milk when she unlatched. Her latch is very shallow with the shield too so I worry if she will ever be able to take the breast in her mouth I’ve tried and she just fusses until I put the shield back on.
So I guess any experience similar to mine would be helpful in reassuring me that I will be able to feed her no problem and fill her when we are exclusively breastfeeding?
Any any tips on getting the nipple shield away?
She is currently 4lb 5oz she was 3lb born.
