If I don't put bf DD on bottle regularly, do you think she will go on the 'spouts' at 6 months

do you know I completely misread the title and just had a look to see why you wanted her to have sprouts

mit · 16/08/2004 19:33

I had this same thing Twiglett - I gave dd a bottle of EBM a couple of times a week until she was about 6/7 weeks and then I stopped because bf was so much easier. She is now 6months and she does take a soft spout (we use the Avent Magic Cup). She won't take EBM from it but will happily glug back 2oz of water or diluted juice. I think she knows that breastmilk can come from a much nicer receptacle if she's awkward enough.
I wish, with hindsight, that I hadn't stopped giving her a bottle. If I were you, and I could wind the clock back a few months, I would get in the habit of giving her a bottle once or twice a week of EBM so she doesn't become too fussy.
Hope this makes sense and is of some use,
mit x

Sorry - she is now 8 months - not 6...........honestly I'd forget my own head if it wasn't screwed on.....

Twiglett i agree totally with mit i have 6 month old who totally refuses bottle yet takes water from anyway up cup will not take milk from it. Initially ds took ebm from bottle at 6/7 weeks then started to fuss so i gave up as it was easier breastfeeding I went back to work at 4 and a half months and it has been hell for everyone else concerned trying to get him to take milk from bottle and I have tried all different teats etc. Fortunately he is on 3 meals a day which helps but he was really poorly 2 weeks ago and in hospital and i took all sorts of advice re attempting to get him on bottle but he does not want to know just feeds from me!! In hindsight I would of perservered at 2 months instead of having problems now i have afriend who b/f morning and night and at nursery her dd has ebm and she is 4 months old. Whatever you decide good luck.

DD never took a bottle but would happily drink water from soft spout when 6 months old. No problems at all. She never took to normal bottles for expressed bm but took to the wonderful, cant worship enough, savedd our bacon playtex system at 7 months.

scrumpy · 16/08/2004 19:53

Hercules...whats a playtex system? I have tried most things but I dont think I have tried that.

Clayhead · 16/08/2004 19:55

Neither of mine had a bottle more than twice and both were OK at 6 months with spouts. They liked the Tommee Tippee ones.

zebra · 16/08/2004 20:04

Mine didn't really take to the bottle, but were fine with EBM using Avent soft spouts (the old ones, actually) from about 16 weeks. Have you tried them, yet, Twiglett?

playtex

They were recommended to us for bf babies and the teat is a different shape. They are a pain in the sense that you have to use disposable liners in the playtex bottles and can only buy them in independant chemists.
We tried different teats with no luck until got these.

They look good hercules - I'm going to copy that link over to the original thread for tangerinecath's benefit if that's okay with you - not sure if she'll have seen this thread.

Twiglett - I'm struggling to remember what it was like with ds1 - he never had a bottle and it was hard work when he suddenly went cold turkey on bf when he was 8 months - went straight onto a spout then though after about a week's perserverance. Wasn't fun though, so I can well appreciate you'd want a kinder gentler method!!

hercules · 16/08/2004 20:28

Of course it's fine.

Spod · 16/08/2004 20:55

i only gave dd about 8 bottles of ebm, at around 3-4 months, then, like you, just stuck to bf as couldnt be doing with the faffing around. dd had a soft spout cup with her first solid meal (at 6 months) and has drunk water from it since... only took a few goes for her to get the hang of it. have never tried putting ebm in though... i wonder what she'd do!

toddlerbob · 16/08/2004 21:20

No bottles here at all, and bob could drink easily from a soft spout at around 6 months and also a straw cup at around 9 months. He couldn't hold either himself and hit his mouth until 12 months, but that's another story.

Skara · 16/08/2004 21:24

hi twig, fellow failing lactating loser

mine go straight on to water in those avent type spouty cup things at 6 months when they start solids cos they only ever bf and I've never done bottles. They never seem to have any probs and progress onto anywayup cups after a few months (so I can spend years unable to get the lids off!)

sportyspice · 16/08/2004 21:25

My dd's did with their water at around this age but i never tried it with milk as b/fed for full year.

pesme · 19/08/2004 09:03

Hi twiglett, dd is 7 months and is on 5 feeds a day (really 4 as one is a split feed. How many feeds is your dd having? She is starting nursery next month so am in the same boat as you, she takes water from a heinz cup but crafty thing refuses milk.
