Help! Is it the formula or is it something else?

LO is 4 weeks old and for the last 2 weeks he has been uncomfortable constantly straining as if he is trying to do a poo, wriggling and gurning non stop pretty much. He doesnt seem to have wind and his poo when he goes it mushy as it should be. This week we have had a few watery dark green poo's which has thrown me a bit.

He has been diagnosed with bad reflux. Got medication for it which has helped big time! The medication doesnt seem to have helped settled his tummy and uncomfortableness but has stopped the projectile vomiting .

He isn't getting any decent sleeps because it's disturbing him. I'm at wits end and just want to help him Sad. He is FF SMA, gives us wind.

Could it be the formula upsetting his tummy? Any help would be great!!

Check with Dr about what other medications can be given.

Have a read of this article on CMPA and see if any of the symptoms sound familiar Smile

Assuming the meds he’s on are gaviscon? If so that simply thickens the stomach contents to prevent it coming back up. If he’s in pain from reflux due to acid then ranitidine is a better medicine as it neutralises the acid, but it won’t stop the vom. So depends - if he’s putting on weight despite being sick I’d switch to ranitidine and live with the sickness

Thank you for your replies! Went to the dr's yesterday and she has put him onto Nutramigen to see how he gets on with that.

We have both gaviscon and ranitidine for him. Not used gaviscon since Thursday and a bit unsure about the ranitidine now the 2 bottles he has had with it yesterday and during the night he has been sick.

Ranitidine won’t stop sickness. It will neutralise stomach acid so there won’t be pain from that.
Gaviscon will stop sickness (and also cause constipation) but won’t neutralise acid so won’t stop the pain from acid.

So - generally, gaviscon if puking is causing lack of weight gain. Otherwise live with the puking and give ranitidine for the pain from the acid.
