Reflux / Gaviscon

My 8 week old has been diagnosed with reflux this week. He has always been a sicky baby but in the last couple of weeks it has really started to bother him (He screamed for 5 hours solid one day, crashed out for 10 mins & started screaming again). The Dr has put him on Gaviscon but he hasn't pooed since he started it so I think I need to stop it but it has worked so well for hus reflux I am reluctant to.

The reflux really knocked me for six, I was really enjoying motherhood & coping pretty well up until then but the sickness & screaming was so bad I couldn't leave the house. I am lying in bed crying at the thought of being in that position again if I have to stop the gaviscon.

Are there other products the Dr might try or do I just have to live with the reflux until he grows out of it?

He is on exclusively expressed breastmilk so an anti reflux formula isn't the answer.

Gaviscon had the same effect on my DD. We use Infacol and that seems to help. I found that 8 weeks was the worst time. She is now 12 weeks and although she is still affected by reflux, it is not as bad. Hope this helps- it is tough and I hope she gets better soon.

Gaviscon is total rubbish IMO. With DD1 it just replaced one problem with another - painful acid reflux with painful constipation.

She was put on omeprazole (LoSec) at 8 weeks and transformed in less than 48 hours. Each dose is a capsule you open yourself which contains granules. You place them on your finger and swipe into the mouth just before a feed (DD1 started on one a day, then two as her weight increased). You can put the tiniest dot of pear purée on the granules to help "stick" them together (advised by our paediatrician). We weaned her off it at 8 months (she actually liked taking it Blush)

DD2 is 5 weeks and going the same way, so this time I am asking for the LoSec straight away.

My DS had reflux with projectile vomiting and was put on Ranatidine then Gaviscon. Sorry but I can't remember in which order. He had constipation too and ended up being prescribed lactulose to help him 'go'
