Reflux

Hi,

My second son is almost 8 weeks now. He seems to have bog standard reflux which is getting worse in that nights are very difficult.

I know I also have a strong let down which is hard to manage - burps seem to make it worse obviously if I've not managed to burp him which is when he's very sleepy. He's also really heavy now (on 91st) at 13 lb.

He's clearly starting to get a bit sore, and constantly clears his throat, makes growling noises. Always seems to be chewing bits of cottage cheese. Possets can be really big but he also gulps when trying to sleep then gets upset.

Now only really sleeping on me on his tummy with me propped up. He was till last week sleeping around 3 hours then chunks of 2. Is now waking hourly. Slings most of the day. Happily settled in his sleepy head at 5 am only to wake gurgling and upset at 6.

No tt, he was seen by a lact consultant. I try to do laid back bf positions but he still manages to swallow air or choke on let down.

Will gavisgon help at all? I've been offered some by gp but reluctant as a) I don't think it's easy to give to bf baby? and b) he's only pooing every couple of days and I don't want to constipate him!

Would just twice a day ease any of the pain he has?

I'm thinking about asking for ranitidine. Any point? Any side effects?

Does this get better? I felt so hopeless yesterday when a mum of a 9 week old said she was getting 11 hours a night.

I need to be a mum to a 5 year old too Sad

Sorry to hear that you are struggling. Have you read this on Kellymom?

Tackytriceratops · 07/07/2018 08:47

Yes jilted, many times! Thanks. I'm trying hard to do what's advised. I don't think I have oversupply as his poos are so infrequent now - I do think I had a bit a couple of weeks ago.

There's real reflux in there too unfortunately.

I suppse is like to know if a bit of gavisgon would actually calm the pain and irritation or does it need to be ranitidine?

kellymom.com/hot-topics/reflux/

Reading this again I may try more frequent feeds.

I'm even wondering if gripe water might help a bit?

We do get a lot of back arching during feeds but hard to tell if wind or pain. Sometimes not settled after wards or during.

Not sure on that one sorry. I’ve always thought that reflux was a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Do you think it’s the forceful letdown causin it?

Tackytriceratops · 07/07/2018 11:56

Hmmm I'm going to have a watch and think. It's possible the boobs are getting out of control again.

We did have a couple of days earlier this week where I felt things were improving but maybe it was that the milk had calmed down a bit.

I know 8 weeks is a classic fussy time too.

My son had awful silent reflux and infant gaviscon worked wonders for him. But he was formula not breast so wasn't difficult to pop it in the bottle. Could you express enough to mix and give with the gaviscon?
