So I'm due DD2 in a few weeks & I really don't know what formula to use? I used Apatmil with my first DD but over the past few weeks I've read a lot of negative things about Aptamil & how it's made their children unwell recently.
What does everyone recommend? I know every child is different etc but I just would like to know what everyone recommends. Thanks

Aldis is fantastic and at least £2 cheaper than all the others!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 06/07/2018 17:51

The best formula is the one that’s for sale nearest to you. The last thing you will want in a few months is 10ft if snow and the formula you are using is a 10 mile round trip.

They all have to conform to certain standards so there isn’t really much difference between them, although the manufacturers would try to convince you otherwise Smile

Yes agree with what sells locally when you’re all out and need a carton! Cow & Gate and Aptimal sell everywhere (lifesaver when we were camping and the small shop only sold the basics!)

Aptamil would of been my choice but i'm just worried reading what I've read about Aptamil, looking at their website it says they've changed their formulation from June 2018 & then all of these people on Facebook have said how sick their babies have become since starting the 'new box' of formula.

@Tinks15 I read the same thing about SMA before I had my little girl in 2016, so used aptamil with her. Having number 2 in October and just wondering what to use. May use cow and gate this time as it's the cheapest and made by same people as aptamil.

DwangelaForever · 06/07/2018 19:24

I've looked it up and it seems the whey/casein balance is different, that's why it's caused problems for babies already using it. Obvs your newborn won't have used it before so will be fine to start on it (if you know what I mean)

Moonkissedlegs · 06/07/2018 19:25

There are quite strict guidelines around formula ingredients, and ultimately they all have to pretty much be the same. I think stories about children getting sick on new Aptamil are probably just hearsay.

I went for Aptamil with my PFB, and Cow and Gate (almost identical but 2 quid per carton cheaper) for my second!

DwangelaForever · 06/07/2018 19:37

@Moonkissedlegs from what I gather it's the same formula but balance of whey and casein has changed so ideally to avoid a dicky tummy they should be transitioned to new tubs gradually.

Ps I was totally PFB with my first and picked aptamil cause it seemed like the best cause it was expensive and this time I'm gonna be all over cow and gate 😂

Baubletrouble43 · 06/07/2018 19:42

I used cow and gate with my dts and they did well on it. They puked a lot, but some babies are pukers . How do those reviewers know the aptamil caused the puking? My puky dts seemed to puke less on c and g comfort.

We now use hipp organic as my son had really bad colic and aptamil didn't seem to agree with him at all. He loves the hipp and is doing so much better on it. Wish I'd known about it earlier. Think different babies are all different though so it might be trial and error to what agrees with them. Hospitals and hcps seem to love pushing aptamil though.

1tobleroneplease · 06/07/2018 19:46

I'm using aptimal (baby is 6 months) and not had any problems at all. I think they're all probably much of a muchness!

TroubledLichen · 06/07/2018 19:54

I imagine the reason that babies have been sick on the new formula is because it was a different composition to what they were previously drinking. Hence why if you switch brands you’re usually advised to do it gradually and not unless absolutely necessary. So if you want to use Apatmil then I would just go ahead and do so. Personally I did Hipp Organic until we moved and had to switch to a US brand and DD had no issues whatsoever. Agree with PP that availability of ready made cartons for on the go is key though!

Tinks15 · 06/07/2018 19:55

Thanks all, I remember previously hospitals & hcps push for aptamil.
bauble I think people have compared the 'old type formula' & then made a bottle with the 'new type formula' & some people have posted pics of the bottle of milk all concealed etc. Lots of people have said their babies won't take more than a couple of ounces at time, they are literally puking up the milk within a few minutes, nappies are awful, continuous crying etc.

Cow & gate seem to be pretty popular.

I've used HiPP with both my babies with no issues. Friends have used it too & one has just switched to HiPP from Aptamil & it has greatly improved the colic. I've always found it to be cheaper than the other brands too. Sainsbury's have started doing their own brand formula which I've heard good things about but haven't tried.

ohwhatshouldido · 06/07/2018 20:13

Hipp is fantastic. Wish we had found it sooner.
It fixed belly ache, wind, colic type symptoms.
Used it for baby 2 too. Highly recommend.

Tinks15 · 06/07/2018 20:14

Always heard good things about HIPP, I just want to make sure whichever one I go for my local shop/supermarket stock it. I don't want to be travelling miles for a particular brand of formula.

My baby (shes 7 weeks now) is on Aptamil Comfort. Shes fine on it but i'm considering swicthing it to HIPP organic

Rainshowers · 07/07/2018 17:57

We us HIPP. DD1 started on SMA but I found it quite thick and greasy so moved onto hipp as it seemed lighter. Went straight into if for DD2 as well. Only problem at the moment is they’re changing the packaging for the stage 1 ready made cartons so you can’t buy it anywhere. I’ve had to use the odd SMA when out and about but to be honest it hasn’t been a problem.
